Jaimini astrology gives special importance to one planet in every chart: the Atmakaraka, the significator of the soul. The Karakamsa is simply the sign this planet occupies in the Navamsa chart. Read as a Lagna, it is used to understand what a person is deeply drawn to: the kind of work that feels like a calling, the inner nature, and the spiritual path.
Take the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn and note the degrees each has covered within its own sign, ignoring which sign it is in. The planet with the highest degrees is the Atmakaraka. This and the other six roles are explained in Atmakaraka and the Chara Karakas.
(Some astrologers use eight planets and include Rahu, counting its degrees backward from the end of the sign. The seven-planet scheme is used here.)
Each sign has nine Navamsa parts of 3┬░20'. Find which part the Atmakaraka is in and count from the starting sign: Aries for fire signs, Capricorn for earth signs, Libra for air signs and Cancer for water signs. The method is set out in Nakshatra Padas and Navamsa Explained.
The Navamsa sign of the Atmakaraka is the Karakamsa.
Example 1. Suppose the planets' degrees within their signs are: Sun 12┬░, Moon 4┬░, Mars 19┬░, Mercury 23┬░, Jupiter 8┬░, Venus 15┬░ and Saturn 26┬░10', with Saturn in Leo.
Example 2. Venus is the Atmakaraka at 28┬░ Gemini.
You will meet two words. Many authors use Karakamsa and Swamsa for the same thing. Others keep Swamsa for the sign read inside the Navamsa chart and Karakamsa for the same sign carried back to the rasi chart. In practice most astrologers read the Navamsa chart with the Karakamsa sign as the first house, and that is the method described below.
Do not confuse it with the Navamsa Lagna, which is the Navamsa sign of the ascendant. The Karakamsa comes from a planet, so it does not depend on the minute of birth as strongly.
Jaimini and Parashara describe what a planet placed in the Karakamsa sign of the Navamsa leans a person toward. In today's terms:
| Planet in Karakamsa | Leaning |
|---|---|
| Sun | Public service, administration, positions of responsibility |
| Moon (especially when bright) | Comforts, care of others, learning; with Venus, a refined life |
| Mars | Engineering, metals, fire, machinery, the uniformed services |
| Mercury | Trade, skilled crafts, design, writing, dealing with people |
| Jupiter | Sacred and philosophical learning, teaching, advisory work |
| Venus | Official or public roles, the arts, enjoyment of life |
| Saturn | Success in a traditional or well-established line of work |
| Rahu | Machines, technology, medicines and unconventional skills |
| Ketu | Exacting or technical work, and a contemplative turn of mind |
These are leanings, not job titles. The classical lists were written for another age, and the modern astrologer translates them into the fields of today. Where several planets are placed in or aspect the Karakamsa, their meanings blend.
With the Karakamsa as the first house of the Navamsa, the other houses are read much as usual:
The best-known use of the Karakamsa is to find the Ishta Devata, the form of the divine a person is naturally drawn to worship. Jaimini's rule: look at the 12th sign from the Karakamsa in the Navamsa. A planet placed there indicates the deity. If more than one planet is there, the strongest is taken; if the sign is empty, its lord is used.
| Planet | Deity |
|---|---|
| Sun | Shiva |
| Moon | Gauri (Parvati) |
| Mars | Skanda (Murugan, Subrahmanya) |
| Mercury | Vishnu |
| Jupiter | Samba Shiva (Shiva with the Mother) |
| Venus | Lakshmi |
| Saturn | Vishnu |
| Rahu | Durga |
| Ketu | Ganesha |
Jaimini adds that Ketu in the 12th from the Karakamsa is a mark of a strong pull toward liberation.
Continuing Example 1. The Karakamsa is Scorpio. The 12th sign from Scorpio is Libra. If the Moon is in Libra in the Navamsa, the indicated deity is Gauri. If Libra is empty in the Navamsa, its lord Venus is taken, which indicates Lakshmi.
This is a guide to devotion, not a restriction. Family tradition, the family deity and personal faith all have their place, and different teachers apply the rule with small variations.
The Karakamsa is the Navamsa sign of the Atmakaraka, the planet with the highest degrees in its sign. Treated as a Lagna in the Navamsa chart, it shows the soul's leanings: planets in it point to the kind of work and learning a person is drawn to, and the 12th sign from it points to the Ishta Devata. Use it as a guide to inner direction alongside the main chart, not as a rule that overrides it.
Karakamsa is the sign that the Atmakaraka, the planet with the highest degrees in the chart, occupies in the Navamsa. In Jaimini astrology this sign is treated as a Lagna for reading the soul's leanings, vocation and spiritual path.
First find the Atmakaraka: among the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn, the one that has travelled furthest in its sign. Then find the Navamsa sign of that planet. That sign is the Karakamsa.
Look at the 12th sign from the Karakamsa in the Navamsa chart. A planet placed there indicates the deity; if the sign is empty, its lord is used. Jaimini gives a deity for each planet.
Authors use the words differently. Many use both for the Atmakaraka's Navamsa sign. Some call it Swamsa when it is read in the Navamsa chart and Karakamsa when the same sign is read in the rasi chart.
