The navamsa (D9) is the most important divisional chart in Vedic astrology. It shows the deeper strength of each planet and is read alongside the birth chart in every serious analysis. When a planet sits in the same sign in both charts, it is called vargottama, "the best of the divisions". This guide explains why it matters and exactly where it happens.
Each sign of 30 degrees is divided into nine parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes. Each part is a navamsa, and the nine navamsas of a sign run through the zodiac starting from:
Because of this, exactly one of the nine navamsas of every sign falls in that sign itself. That part is the vargottama zone. (The same method gives the Navamsa Lagna.)
| Sign type | Signs | Vargottama part | Degrees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movable | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn | 1st navamsa | 0 deg 00' to 3 deg 20' |
| Fixed | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius | 5th navamsa | 13 deg 20' to 16 deg 40' |
| Dual | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | 9th navamsa | 26 deg 40' to 30 deg 00' |
Check with Taurus: its navamsas begin from Capricorn (the 9th from Taurus): Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, then Taurus as the 5th part, 13 deg 20' to 16 deg 40'.
About one planet in nine is vargottama by chance, so most charts have one or two.
The rasi chart shows what a planet promises; the navamsa shows how well that promise is sustained. When both charts place the planet in the same sign, there is no contradiction between the outer and inner picture. Classical writers compare a vargottama planet to one in its own sign. In practice:
The quality is repeated, so the sign's dignity matters. A vargottama planet in its own or exaltation sign is excellent. A vargottama planet in its debilitation sign is steadier than an ordinary debilitated planet, but the weakness of the sign is also repeated; check for cancellation of debilitation.
Both are favourable navamsa positions, but they are different. Vargottama means the same sign in D1 and D9. Pushkara navamsa means the navamsa falls in a benefic sign at certain fixed places in each sign. A few zones are both: 0 deg to 3 deg 20' Cancer, 13 deg 20' to 16 deg 40' Taurus and 26 deg 40' to 30 deg Sagittarius are vargottama and also Pushkara navamsas. See Pushkara Navamsa meaning.
A planet is vargottama when it is in the same sign in the rasi and navamsa charts: 0 to 3 deg 20' in movable signs, 13 deg 20' to 16 deg 40' in fixed signs and 26 deg 40' to 30 deg in dual signs. It gives consistent, stable results, especially when the sign is also a good one for the planet, and a vargottama Lagna or Moon adds resilience to the whole chart.
A planet is vargottama when it occupies the same sign in the birth chart (rasi) and in the navamsa (D9). It is considered stable, strong and able to give its results clearly.
In movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) from 0 to 3 degrees 20 minutes; in fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) from 13 degrees 20 minutes to 16 degrees 40 minutes; in dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) from 26 degrees 40 minutes to 30 degrees.
It is stronger than an ordinary debilitated planet because it is steady in both charts, but the debilitation is repeated in the navamsa. Look for cancellation of debilitation and for the houses it rules before judging it.
When the Lagna degree falls in the vargottama part of its sign, the Rasi Lagna and Navamsa Lagna are the same sign. It is said to give a strong, consistent personality and good physical and mental resilience.
