In Parashari astrology each planet has fixed significations: the Sun always signifies the father, Venus always the spouse, and so on. The Jaimini system adds a second, chart-specific set called the chara karakas, "movable significators". Which planet represents your soul, your career or your spouse depends on your own chart, decided by the planets' degrees. The most important of them is the Atmakaraka, the "significator of the self".
| Rank | Karaka | Signifies |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (highest degree) | Atmakaraka (AK) | The self, the soul's desire, the main lesson of life |
| 2 | Amatyakaraka (AmK) | Career, advisers, the means of achieving goals |
| 3 | Bhratrikaraka (BK) | Siblings, courage, close helpers |
| 4 | Matrikaraka (MK) | Mother, home, education |
| 5 | Putrakaraka (PK) | Children, creativity, students |
| 6 | Gnatikaraka (GK) | Rivals, obstacles, cousins and relatives |
| 7 (lowest degree) | Darakaraka (DK) | Spouse and partners |
Suppose the planets' degrees within their signs are:
| Planet | Degree in sign |
|---|---|
| Sun | 12 deg |
| Moon | 27 deg |
| Mars | 5 deg |
| Mercury | 18 deg |
| Jupiter | 22 deg |
| Venus | 9 deg |
| Saturn | 2 deg |
Ranked from highest: Moon 27, Jupiter 22, Mercury 18, Sun 12, Venus 9, Mars 5, Saturn 2. So:
When two planets are close, compare the minutes and seconds too. Because the ranking depends on exact degrees, a precise birth time matters most when the Moon is close to another planet's degree: the Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so it can change rank within a few hours.
Some classical passages use eight karakas. Rahu is added, and because Rahu moves backwards its degree is counted as 30 minus its degree in the sign (Rahu at 10 degrees counts as 20). An extra karaka, the Pitrikaraka (father), sits between the Matrikaraka and the Putrakaraka. Both schemes are in use. Pick one and use it consistently; the 7-karaka scheme above is the simpler starting point.
The Atmakaraka shows what the soul most wants to learn in this life. Classical and modern interpretations broadly agree:
| Atmakaraka | Theme of the life lesson |
|---|---|
| Sun | Ego and authority; learning humility and right leadership |
| Moon | Emotions and care; learning steadiness and compassion |
| Mars | Energy and conflict; learning to use strength wisely |
| Mercury | Speech and intellect; learning honesty and discernment |
| Jupiter | Knowledge and guidance; learning true wisdom and respect for teachers |
| Venus | Desire and relationships; learning balance in pleasures and love |
| Saturn | Duty and hardship; learning patience, service and detachment |
The Atmakaraka's sign, house and dignity show how easily that lesson unfolds. A well-placed Atmakaraka is regarded as one of the strongest supports in a chart; Jaimini calls it the "king" of the horoscope.
The sign the Atmakaraka occupies in the Navamsa (D9) is called the Karakamsa. Jaimini astrologers treat it almost like a second Lagna: planets in it and in the 12th from it are read for talents, spiritual inclination and the kind of path the person is drawn to. If you are new to the Navamsa, start with what is Navamsa Lagna; a related special zone of the Navamsa is explained in Pushkara Navamsa meaning.
Neither replaces the Parashari reading; they add a second, independent check. When both systems point the same way, the conclusion is much more reliable.
The chara karakas rank the seven planets (Sun to Saturn) by their degree within the sign. The highest is the Atmakaraka (the self), followed by the Amatyakaraka (career) and down to the Darakaraka (spouse). An 8-karaka scheme adds Rahu and the Pitrikaraka. The Atmakaraka's sign in the Navamsa, the Karakamsa, is a key point in Jaimini astrology.
List the degrees of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn within their signs, ignoring the sign itself. The planet with the highest degree is the Atmakaraka. In the 8-karaka scheme Rahu is included too, with its degree counted as 30 minus its degree in the sign.
The Darakaraka is the planet with the lowest degree within its sign among the chara karakas. It signifies the spouse and partnerships in Jaimini astrology.
The 7-karaka scheme uses Sun to Saturn. The 8-karaka scheme adds Rahu and a separate Pitrikaraka (father). Both appear in classical texts; astrologers choose one and use it consistently.
Karakamsa is the sign the Atmakaraka occupies in the Navamsa chart. Jaimini astrology reads it, and the houses from it, for the soul's direction, talents and spiritual path.
