Most people look at the 7th house for marriage. Jaimini astrology adds a second, very specific reference point: the Upapada Lagna, usually written UL. It is one of the most used tools of the Jaimini system, and once you know how to find the Arudha of a house it takes only a minute to calculate.
Every house has an Arudha, a "reflected image" that shows how the matters of that house appear in the outer world. The Arudha of the 1st house is the well-known Arudha Lagna. The Arudha of the 12th house is called the Upapada (also A12 or Gauna Pada).
Why the 12th? The 12th house is the house of giving and letting go. Marriage, in the classical view, is a bond in which each person gives something of themselves to another. The image of that giving is the Upapada, and so it is read for the spouse, the spouse's family and the staying power of the marriage.
Step 1. Find the 12th house from your Lagna and the planet that rules that sign.
Step 2. Count from the 12th house to the sign where its lord sits, counting the 12th house as 1. Call the number n.
Step 3. Count n signs again, starting from the lord's sign as 1. The sign you reach is the Upapada.
Step 4 (exception). If the sign you reach is the 12th house itself or the 7th from it, take the 10th sign from that sign instead.
In practice the exception gives these shortcuts: when the lord is in the 12th house itself or in the 7th from it, the Upapada is the 10th sign from the 12th house; when the lord is in the 4th or the 10th from the 12th house, the Upapada is the 4th sign from the 12th house.
Example 1: Aries Lagna, Jupiter in Cancer.
Example 2: Leo Lagna, Moon in Cancer.
Example 3: Libra Lagna, Mercury in Gemini.
For Scorpio and Aquarius, which have two lords (Mars and Ketu, Saturn and Rahu), many astrologers use Mars and Saturn; Jaimini specialists choose the stronger lord by set rules. Use one method consistently.
The sign and its lord. The Upapada sign and the condition of its lord describe the circumstances of the marriage and the background of the spouse. A lord in its own or exalted sign, or with benefics, is read as a supportive, respected family connection.
Planets in or aspecting the Upapada. Benefics such as Jupiter and Venus add warmth and goodwill. Other planets describe themes rather than verdicts: Saturn can show a mature or duty-minded partner or a later marriage, Mars an energetic and direct one.
The 2nd from the Upapada. Jaimini gives special weight to the 2nd sign from the UL: it shows what keeps the marriage going. Benefics there, or a strong 2nd lord, are read as steady support. When this sign is under pressure, the practical reading is that the couple needs to put more conscious effort into shared values, family matters and finances.
Relation to the Arudha Lagna. When the Upapada falls in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or trikona (5th, 9th) from the Arudha Lagna, the marriage and the person's public life are said to support each other. In the 6th, 8th or 12th from it, the two can pull in different directions, for example work that keeps the partners apart.
Matching. Some astrologers compare the bride's or groom's Lagna or Moon sign with the partner's Upapada sign or its trines as one more sign of affinity. It is an extra layer; see how to check marriage compatibility beyond porutham for the wider picture.
The Upapada never stands alone. A full reading for marriage also looks at:
A stressed Upapada with a strong 7th house, or the reverse, is common. No single factor decides how a marriage goes; understanding, effort and circumstances matter at least as much as any chart factor.
Texts and teachers differ on small points: a few schools calculate the Upapada from the 2nd house for some Lagnas, and the two-lord signs are handled differently. The method above, the Arudha of the 12th house with the standard exception, is the most widely taught.
The Upapada Lagna is the Arudha of the 12th house. Count from the 12th house to its lord, count the same number again from the lord, and apply the exception when the result is the 12th house or its 7th. Read the sign, its lord and especially the 2nd sign from it for the marriage and the spouse's family, always together with the 7th house, Venus and the navamsa.
Upapada Lagna (UL) is the Arudha, or reflected image, of the 12th house. In Jaimini astrology it is read for marriage, the spouse and the spouse's family.
Count the signs from the 12th house to the sign where its lord sits, then count the same number again from the lord. If the result is the 12th house itself or the 7th from it, take the 10th sign from the result.
No. The 7th house shows partnership and attraction in general. The Upapada shows the marriage as a lasting bond and the family one marries into. Both are read together.
It shows what sustains the marriage. Benefics there or a well placed lord are read as support; other placements simply show where more care and understanding are needed.
