Your Lagna describes who you really are. But the world rarely sees the real you; it sees an image built from your work, wealth, possessions and reputation. Jaimini astrology has a separate point for that image: the Arudha Lagna, also written A1 or simply AL.
"Arudha" means "mounted" or "ascended": the Lagna's lord "reflects" the Lagna onto another sign, like the image of an object in a mirror. That reflection is how others perceive you.
Step 1. Count from the Lagna to the sign where the Lagna lord sits. Count the Lagna as 1. Call this number n.
Step 2. Count n signs again, starting from the Lagna lord's sign (which counts as 1). The sign you land on is the Arudha Lagna.
Step 3 (exception). If the sign you land on is the Lagna itself or the 7th from the Lagna, the Arudha cannot stay there. Take the 10th sign from that sign instead.
Example 1: Aries Lagna, Mars in Cancer.
Example 2: Taurus Lagna, Venus in Gemini.
Example 3: Gemini Lagna, Mercury in Gemini.
If you need to find your Lagna first, see how to find your Lagna.
The same method works for every house: count from the house to its lord, count the same again from the lord, and apply the same exception (the house itself or the 7th from it moves to the 10th from there). These are the bhava padas, A1 to A12.
| Pada | From house | Common name | Read for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | 1st | Arudha Lagna | Image, status, reputation |
| A2 | 2nd | Dhana pada | Visible wealth, family's standing |
| A4 | 4th | Matri / Sukha pada | Property, vehicles, home as seen by others |
| A7 | 7th | Dara pada | Business partners, public dealings |
| A10 | 10th | Rajya pada | Career image, position |
| A12 | 12th | Upapada (UL) | Marriage and spouse |
Treat the Arudha Lagna like a second Lagna for worldly matters, and count houses from it.
The Lagna still governs health, character and the inner life. Someone may have a modest Lagna and a powerful Arudha (outward success, inner struggle) or the reverse (a strong person whose worth is not yet recognised). Reading both together gives a much rounder picture.
The Arudha Lagna is one of several Jaimini tools. Another is the soul significator explained in Atmakaraka and the chara karakas. Many Jaimini astrologers look at both: the Atmakaraka for what the soul seeks, the Arudha Lagna for what the world sees.
To find the Arudha Lagna, count from the Lagna to its lord, then count the same number again from the lord. If you land on the Lagna or the 7th from it, take the 10th sign from there. The Arudha Lagna shows your image and status; houses counted from it, especially the 11th and 12th, describe gains and expenses in worldly life. The Upapada (A12) is read for marriage.
Count the signs from the Lagna to the sign where the Lagna lord sits. Then count the same number of signs again from the Lagna lord. The sign you reach is the Arudha Lagna, unless it is the Lagna itself or the 7th from it; then take the 10th sign from that point instead.
The Lagna shows who you are; the Arudha Lagna shows how the world sees you: your image, reputation, status and the material face of your life.
Upapada is the Arudha of the 12th house (A12). It is calculated the same way, from the 12th house and its lord, and is read in Jaimini astrology for marriage and the spouse.
Scorpio has Mars and Ketu, Aquarius has Saturn and Rahu. Many astrologers simply use Mars and Saturn; Jaimini specialists choose the stronger of the two lords by set rules. Use one method consistently.
