The Vimsamsa, or D20, is the divisional chart of spiritual practice. Vimsa means twenty: each sign is divided into twenty equal parts. Sage Parashara gives this chart to upasana, a word that covers worship, prayer, mantra, meditation and every regular practice by which a person draws near to the divine.
The 5th and 9th houses of the birth chart already show devotion and dharma. The D20 looks more closely at how that inclination becomes a living practice.
Each sign of 30 degrees is divided into 20 parts of 1°30'. The starting point depends on whether the sign is movable, fixed or dual:
Notice the difference from the Shodasamsa D16, where fixed signs begin from Leo and dual signs from Sagittarius. In the D20 those two are exchanged.
To find the part number, divide the degrees within the sign by 1.5 and take the next whole number.
| Parts | Degrees | Parts | Degrees |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 5 | 0°00' to 7°30' | 11 to 15 | 15°00' to 22°30' |
| 6 to 10 | 7°30' to 15°00' | 16 to 20 | 22°30' to 30°00' |
Jupiter at 14° Cancer.
Ketu at 5° Leo.
Moon at 22° Virgo.
Lagna at 29° Aquarius.
A quick check: a movable sign runs from Aries to Scorpio, a fixed sign from Sagittarius to Cancer, and a dual sign from Leo to Pisces.
A word of care. The D20 describes inclination and style. It does not measure anyone's worth or closeness to God, and it must not be used to tell a person that they are spiritually "weak". Sincere practice is open to every chart.
1. Start with the rasi chart. The 5th house shows mantra and devotion, the 9th the teacher and dharma, the 12th surrender and liberation. Jupiter and Ketu are the two planets most connected with the inner life. The D20 refines these.
2. The D20 Lagna and its lord. A strong D20 Lagna lord, in its own or exalted sign or in a kendra or trikona of the D20, shows a natural and lasting pull toward practice.
3. The 5th house of the D20. Planets here colour the kind of devotion. Jupiter leans toward scripture and a traditional path, the Moon toward heartfelt devotion to the Mother, the Sun toward disciplined worship of Shiva or the Sun, Venus toward devotion expressed through beauty and music, Mercury toward chanting and study, Saturn toward austerity and service, Mars toward vows and energetic disciplines.
4. The 9th house of the D20. This shows the teacher, pilgrimage and the tradition a person feels at home in. A strong 9th lord of the D20 often shows good guidance.
5. The 12th house of the D20 and Ketu. These show the capacity for silence, meditation and letting go.
6. Jupiter in the D20. Jupiter's sign and house show how wisdom supports practice. Jupiter in its own sign or exalted in the D20 is a steadying influence.
7. Timing. The inner life usually deepens in the dashas and sub-periods of the 5th, 9th and 12th lords, Jupiter, Ketu, or the D20 Lagna lord.
A chart may show a quiet 9th house in the rasi chart and a strong D20. Such a person may not look outwardly religious, yet keeps a steady private practice. The reverse, strong religious houses in the rasi chart with a scattered D20, can describe someone who values tradition and takes part in observances while the personal, daily practice comes and goes.
Those who work with Jaimini methods read the D20 together with the Karakamsa, where the 12th from the Atmakaraka's Navamsa sign points to the chosen deity. The two approaches usually tell a consistent story.
The Lagna takes about two hours to cross a sign, so each of the 20 parts rises for only about 6 minutes. Unless the birth time is known to within a few minutes, use the D20 signs of Jupiter, Ketu, the Moon and the 5th and 9th lords, and leave the D20 houses aside.
In Parashara's list the D20 follows the D16 and comes before the Siddhamsa D24. The order is meaningful: comforts, then worship, then knowledge. The three are often read one after another to see how a person balances outer ease, inner practice and learning.
The Vimsamsa divides each sign into 20 parts of 1°30', counted from Aries for movable signs, from Sagittarius for fixed signs and from Leo for dual signs. Read the D20 Lagna lord, Jupiter, Ketu and the 5th, 9th and 12th houses in it for the style and steadiness of a person's spiritual practice. Its Lagna changes every six minutes, so trust the planets' signs more than the houses unless the birth time is exact.
The Vimsamsa or D20 is a divisional chart made by dividing each sign into 20 parts of 1 degree 30 minutes. It is read for worship, devotion and spiritual practice.
Each sign is divided into 20 equal parts. The parts are counted from Aries for movable signs, from Sagittarius for fixed signs and from Leo for dual signs.
The 5th house for mantra and devotion, the 9th for the teacher and dharma, and the 12th for meditation and letting go, together with the D20 Lagna and its lord.
The D20 Lagna changes about every six minutes, so its houses can be used only when the birth time is known to within a few minutes.
