Origin (Birth) of Mangal

There are three different stories about the birth of Mangal (Mars) found in the Puranas:

Story One

Lord Shiva's sweat, which fell to the Earth, was nurtured by Mother Earth (Bhoomi Devi). The child grew up and performed severe penance (tapas) to Lord Shiva. His penance was so intense that it generated immense heat throughout the universe. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva granted him the position of a planet. He became known as Angarakan (born from a part of Shiva's body) and is also called Bhoomi Putran (son of the Earth). He is also seen as the embodiment of Agni (fire).

The following verse describes him:

"Dharani Garbha Sambhootham Vidyuth Kanthi Samaprabham Kumaram Shakthi Hastham Tham Mangalam Pranamamyaham"

Translation: I bow to Mangal, who was born from the womb of Mother Earth, who is radiant like lightning, who is the son of the Earth, and who wields the weapon of Shakti.

Story Two (Skanda Purana)

The demon Andhakasura received a boon from Lord Shiva that made him nearly invincible: every drop of his blood that fell to the ground would create another demon. Empowered by this boon, Andhakasura began to terrorize the city of Avanthika. The people prayed to Shiva for protection. Shiva engaged in a fierce battle with the demon. During the battle, drops of Shiva's sweat fell to the ground and split open. From one such drop, Mangal (Mars) was born. Shiva eventually killed Andhakasura. Budha (Mercury) absorbed the blood that flowed from the demon. This is why Mars is associated with Shiva and is considered a fiery planet.

Story Three (Matsya Purana)

Lord Shiva sent Virabhadra to destroy the Yagna (sacrificial ritual) of Daksha. After destroying the Yagna, Virabhadra's anger was still not appeased, and he wandered about aimlessly. The Devas, fearing him, prayed to Shiva to calm him down. Virabhadra transformed his fierce form into a calmer one, and he came to be known as Mangal.

• Sage Sanandha Munivar once performed penance here. A frog was chased by a snake into the tank, disturbing the sage's penance. He cursed that snakes and frogs should not live in the tank. Hence, frogs are not seen in this tank today.
• Taking a dip in this tank is believed to cure all ailments.

The Jatayu Kundam (Sacred Pit)

• When Ravana was carrying Sita away, Jatayu tried to stop him. Ravana cut off Jatayu's wings.
• When Rama came looking for Sita, Jatayu narrated the events and died at Rama's feet.
• Rama performed the last rites for Jatayu at this spot, which is now known as Jatayu Kundam.
• Even today, it is believed that anointing oneself with the sacred ash from this pit can cure incurable diseases.
• A stone statue of Jatayu receiving Moksha is present near the Kundam.

The Sacred Ash (Thiruchandurundai)

• This is the prasadam (sacred offering) of Lord Vaitheeswara, given to cure diseases.
• It is made by mixing the sacred ash from the Jatayu Kundam with the water from the Sitthamirtha Theertham.
• The mixture is ground on a stone at the Muthukumaraswami shrine while chanting "Namasivaya" (the five-syllable mantra).
• It is rolled into small balls and offered to the Goddess, then distributed to devotees.
