The Navamsa (D9) chart is the most used divisional chart in Vedic astrology. It is read for marriage, inner strength, dharma and the true strength of every planet. Its starting point, like any chart, is its rising sign: the Navamsa Lagna.
This guide explains what the Navamsa Lagna is, how to calculate it by hand, what it shows, and why birth time accuracy matters so much.
Each sign of 30 degrees is divided into nine equal parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes. Each part is a navamsa (a "ninth"). Every navamsa is assigned to a sign. Your Navamsa Lagna is the sign assigned to the navamsa in which your birth Lagna degree falls.
If you are not sure of your birth Lagna, start with how to find your Lagna.
Divide your Lagna's degree within its sign by 3 degrees 20 minutes (3.333 degrees) and round up.
| Part | Degree range in the sign |
|---|---|
| 1 | 0 deg 00' to 3 deg 20' |
| 2 | 3 deg 20' to 6 deg 40' |
| 3 | 6 deg 40' to 10 deg 00' |
| 4 | 10 deg 00' to 13 deg 20' |
| 5 | 13 deg 20' to 16 deg 40' |
| 6 | 16 deg 40' to 20 deg 00' |
| 7 | 20 deg 00' to 23 deg 20' |
| 8 | 23 deg 20' to 26 deg 40' |
| 9 | 26 deg 40' to 30 deg 00' |
The count begins from a sign set by the element of the Lagna sign:
| Lagna sign element | Signs | Count starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Aries |
| Earth | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Capricorn |
| Air | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | Libra |
| Water | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | Cancer |
(The same rule is often stated as: movable signs start from themselves, fixed signs from the 9th sign, dual signs from the 5th sign. Both give identical results.)
Count forward from the starting sign. Part 1 is the starting sign itself, part 2 the next sign, and so on.
Example 1: Lagna 15 degrees Leo.
Example 2: Lagna 8 degrees Gemini.
Example 3: Lagna 25 degrees Scorpio.
When the Navamsa Lagna is the same sign as the birth Lagna, the Lagna is vargottama. This happens in the 1st navamsa of movable signs, the 5th of fixed signs and the 9th of dual signs. Classically, a vargottama Lagna is steady and strong, and the person shows the qualities of that sign very clearly. The same idea applies to planets: a planet in the same sign in the birth chart and the Navamsa is vargottama and gains strength.
Some degree ranges in the Navamsa are especially auspicious; see Pushkara Navamsa meaning. The same divisional principle, with ten parts instead of nine, gives the career chart explained in how to read the D10 Dasamsa chart.
The Lagna moves through a whole sign in roughly two hours on average (faster for some signs, slower for others). One navamsa is a ninth of that, so the Navamsa Lagna changes about every 10 to 20 minutes. Near a boundary, even a few minutes of error can change it.
Practical tips:
The Navamsa Lagna is the rising sign of the D9 chart. Divide the Lagna degree by 3 degrees 20 minutes to get the part (1 to 9), then count from Aries (fire), Capricorn (earth), Libra (air) or Cancer (water). When it equals the birth Lagna, the Lagna is vargottama and strong. It shows the inner self, marriage and planetary strength, and because it changes every 10 to 20 minutes, it needs an accurate birth time.
Navamsa Lagna is the rising sign of the Navamsa (D9) chart. It is found by dividing the birth Lagna's sign into nine parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes and seeing which part the Lagna degree falls in.
Divide the Lagna degree within its sign by 3 degrees 20 minutes and round up to get the part number (1 to 9). Then count that many signs from the starting sign: Aries for fire signs, Capricorn for earth signs, Libra for air signs and Cancer for water signs.
When the Navamsa Lagna is the same sign as the birth Lagna, the Lagna is called vargottama. It is considered a strong, stable Lagna that gives the qualities of that sign clearly.
Each navamsa is only 3 degrees 20 minutes, and the Lagna moves through that much in roughly 10 to 20 minutes of clock time. A small error in birth time can change the Navamsa Lagna, so an accurate time matters.
