Every house in a Vedic horoscope has a lord: the planet that rules the sign on that house. Where that lord sits tells you where the matters of its house get "delivered" in life. The 10th lord in the 7th, for example, often ties career to partnership or public dealings.
This page explains the few principles that apply to every house lord, works through an example, and then points you to our detailed guide for each of the twelve lords.
| Sign | Lord | Sign | Lord |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | Libra | Venus |
| Taurus | Venus | Scorpio | Mars |
| Gemini | Mercury | Sagittarius | Jupiter |
| Cancer | Moon | Capricorn | Saturn |
| Leo | Sun | Aquarius | Saturn |
| Virgo | Mercury | Pisces | Jupiter |
Rahu and Ketu own no signs in the classical Parashari system, so they are never counted as house lords here.
1. Kendras give strength. A lord in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house is well placed to act. The matters of its house tend to be visible and active in life.
2. Trikonas give fortune. The 1st, 5th and 9th houses are the houses of merit and luck. A lord here brings support, often without great struggle.
3. Dusthanas bring effort. The 6th, 8th and 12th houses are the houses of obstacles, sudden change and loss. A lord here usually means the matters of its house come with work, delays or expense. This is a tendency, not a fixed fate.
4. Upachayas improve with time. The 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses "grow". A lord here often gives modest early results that get better with age and effort.
5. Two houses meet. A lord links the house it rules with the house it sits in. Read both sets of meanings together: the 5th lord (children, intelligence) in the 11th (gains) is a classic sign of gains through intelligence or children.
Three conditions then fine-tune the result: the lord's dignity (exalted, own sign, friendly, enemy or debilitated), the aspects it receives, and the dasa running at the time.
When the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th house sits in another of these three houses, the classical texts call it Viparita Raja Yoga. It is a "reverse" yoga, where one difficult house weakens another, and it often shows success that comes after, or because of, a setback. The three named forms are:
| Yoga | Condition |
|---|---|
| Harsha | 6th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th |
| Sarala | 8th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th |
| Vimala | 12th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th |
Take an Aries Lagna with Saturn in Aquarius.
Reading: career (10th) and gains (11th) are joined in a strong placement. Income tends to grow steadily through work, networks and elder contacts, usually more in the second half of life, in keeping with Saturn's slow nature. The Saturn dasa or bhukti would be the natural time to see it.
Each guide below goes through that lord in all twelve houses:
Two related guides look at specific combinations: the Lagna lord in the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, and wealth combinations of the Lagna lord and 2nd lord.
To read any house lord, find the house it rules and the house it sits in, then combine their meanings. Kendras give strength, trikonas bring fortune, upachayas improve with time and dusthanas ask for effort, while dignity, aspects and dasa decide how strongly it all shows. Use the twelve guides above to go deeper into each lord.
Each house of the chart falls in a zodiac sign, and the planet that rules that sign is the lord of the house. For a Leo Lagna, the 1st house is Leo, so the Sun is the 1st lord; the 10th house is Taurus, so Venus is the 10th lord.
In general, a lord does well in the kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) and trikonas (1, 5, 9), and also improves with time in the upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11). The 6th, 8th and 12th houses (dusthanas) usually bring effort or delays to the matters of the house the lord rules.
No. When the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th sits in another of these three houses, classical texts describe Viparita Raja Yoga, where difficulties turn into gains. Dignity, aspects and the running dasa also change the result.
Both are read together. Planets in a house colour its matters directly, while the lord shows where and how the house's results are delivered. A strong lord can support an empty house very well.
