The Lagna, or ascendant, is the starting point of every Vedic horoscope. It is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, and it becomes the 1st house. All the other houses are counted from it. That is why an astrologer's first question is always: "What is the exact time of birth?"
This guide explains what the Lagna is, how to find yours, and how to estimate it yourself with a simple method.
With these, astrology software works out the local sidereal time and the exact degree rising in the east, then applies the ayanamsa (Sithars Astrology uses the Lahiri ayanamsa) to give the Vedic Lagna.
| Term | What it is | Changes every |
|---|---|---|
| Lagna (ascendant) | Sign rising in the east at birth | About 2 hours |
| Rasi (Moon sign) | Sign the Moon is in | About 2.25 days |
| Sun sign | Sign the Sun is in | About 1 month |
In South India, people often say "my rasi" for the Moon sign and "my lagnam" for the ascendant. Both are important, but they are different things.
You can get a rough idea of your Lagna with the sunrise method:
Step 1. Find the Sun's sign on your birthday. In Vedic (sidereal) astrology, the Sun enters each sign on about these dates every year (a day either way):
| Sun enters | Around | Tamil month |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 14 April | Chithirai |
| Taurus | 15 May | Vaikasi |
| Gemini | 15 June | Aani |
| Cancer | 16 July | Aadi |
| Leo | 17 August | Aavani |
| Virgo | 17 September | Purattasi |
| Libra | 17 October | Aippasi |
| Scorpio | 16 November | Karthigai |
| Sagittarius | 16 December | Margazhi |
| Capricorn | 14 January | Thai |
| Aquarius | 13 February | Maasi |
| Pisces | 14 March | Panguni |
Step 2. At sunrise, the Lagna is the Sun's own sign. The Sun is on the eastern horizon, so the sign it occupies is rising.
Step 3. Count about one sign for every two hours after sunrise. The signs rise in order: Aries, Taurus, Gemini and so on.
Example. Someone born on 25 August at 10:30 am, with sunrise at about 6:00 am. The Sun is in Leo (it entered around 17 August). The birth is 4.5 hours after sunrise, a little over two signs later. So the Lagna is probably Libra, possibly late Virgo or early Scorpio depending on the exact sunrise, the place and how far the Sun had moved into Leo.
Why this is only an estimate. Signs do not rise in equal times. In India, Aries and Pisces rise in a little under two hours, while Cancer, Leo, Virgo and Libra take a little over. The Sun's position inside its sign and your local sunrise also shift the result. Near the boundary between two signs, only an exact calculation can decide.
For a reliable result, use astrology software or a qualified astrologer. The software also gives the Lagna degree, which matters for:
Once you know it, the next step is to look at its lord: where it sits and how strong it is. Our guides to Lagna lord placements and the 1st lord in the 12 houses explain what each placement means.
Your Lagna is the sign rising in the east at your birth. You need the date, exact time and place to find it. The sunrise method gives a good estimate (the Sun's sign at sunrise, then one sign for about every two hours), but for readings, use an exact calculation, and treat the birth time as the most precious detail in your horoscope.
Your date of birth, the exact time of birth and the place of birth (for its latitude, longitude and time zone). Without the time, the Lagna cannot be found reliably.
About every two hours on average, so all twelve signs rise in one day. Some signs rise faster than others; in India, Aries and Pisces take a little under two hours and Cancer to Libra a little over.
No. The Lagna is the sign rising in the east at birth. The Moon sign (rasi) is where the Moon is, and the Sun sign is where the Sun is. They can all be different.
An astrologer can try birth-time rectification from major life events. Until then, give more weight to the Moon sign, which only changes about every two and a quarter days.
