The North Indian Chart Format in Bhrigu Nandi Nadi: Houses, Rashis, and Planets

The North Indian Chart Format: Understanding Houses, Rashis, and Planets

Reading a birth chart is the first step before applying any Bhrigu Nandi Nadi (BNN) rule.

The North Indian Chart Shape

Vedic astrology uses two common chart styles. South Indian and North Indian.

BNN uses the North Indian format. Recognition comes easily with a single glance.

The North Indian chart appears as a large diamond divided into smaller diamond shaped boxes. Twelve boxes exist in total, arranged in a fixed pattern.

The topmost box points upward. Moving counterclockwise, the next box follows, then the next, until returning to the starting point after passing through all twelve.

That is the entire chart. Twelve boxes. Each box may contain numbers, planet names, or both.

The Three Components of Any Horoscope

Every astrological chart, regardless of system or style, is built from only three elements.

Houses. Rashis. Planets.

Twelve houses exist. Twelve rashis exist. Nine planets are used in Vedic astrology.

Understanding what each represents and how they relate reveals the entire structure of a horoscope. Everything else is interpretation.

Part One: The Twelve Houses

In the North Indian chart, houses are fixed. They never move position.

The topmost diamond shaped box always represents the first house. Traditional astrology calls this the Lagna or Ascendant. BNN eventually counts from Jupiter instead, but the fixed position of the first house box remains unchanged on paper.

Moving counterclockwise, the next box is the second house. The next is the third. This continues until the twelfth house, which sits just to the right of the first house when viewing the chart.

This fixed arrangement aids memorization. House positions, once learned, remain true for every chart. The first house always sits at the top. The seventh house always sits at the bottom. The fourth house always sits on the left. The tenth house always sits on the right.

What Each House Represents

The twelve houses correspond to different areas of life. Below is a concise summary based on traditional Vedic meanings, which also inform BNN interpretation.

First House. Self, body, personality, appearance, overall nature. The individual.

Second House. Family of origin, finances, speech, accumulated wealth, possessions. Resources and communication about them.

Third House. Communication, courage, siblings, short journeys, writing, skills. Immediate environment and navigation of it.

Fourth House. Home, mother, emotional foundation, vehicles, property, domestic happiness. Roots and inner security.

Fifth House. Creativity, romance, children, intelligence, past life merits. Creation and affection.

Sixth House. Health, daily routine, service, debts, enemies, obstacles. Challenges requiring confrontation.

Seventh House. Marriage, partnerships, business alliances, public image. Significant one on one relationships.

Eighth House. Transformation, secrets, inheritance, longevity, occult knowledge, sudden events. The hidden and the profound.

Ninth House. Higher learning, long distance travel, spirituality, guru, fortune, father. Beliefs and expansion of horizons.

Tenth House. Career, reputation, social status, achievements, public standing. Role in the world.

Eleventh House. Friends, social networks, gains, income, aspirations, elder siblings. What comes from community.

Twelfth House. Losses, expenses, isolation, foreign lands, sleep, liberation, endings. What must be released.

These meanings remain universal across most Vedic systems. BNN uses them as context. However, BNN prioritizes planetary combinations over house placement. The house adds flavor. The planets provide substance.

Part Two: The Twelve Rashis

Rashis are zodiac signs. They differ from houses. This distinction is the most common confusion for beginners.

Houses are abstract divisions of the chart. They represent areas of life. Rashis are actual constellations of stars that exist in the sky. They represent qualities and characteristics.

In the North Indian chart, rashis appear as numbers placed inside the boxes. Each rashi has a fixed number from one to twelve.

The numbering follows the natural zodiac order.

Aries is number one. Taurus is number two. Gemini is number three. Cancer is number four. Leo is number five. Virgo is number six. Libra is number seven. Scorpio is number eight. Sagittarius is number nine. Capricorn is number ten. Aquarius is number eleven. Pisces is number twelve.

When viewing a North Indian chart, small numbers appear in the boxes. These numbers identify which rashi occupies that house in that particular chart.

For example, if the topmost box (first house) contains the number seven, Libra is rising. The native has Libra Lagna in traditional terms. If the box contains the number one, Aries is rising.

Unlike houses, rashis are not fixed in position. In one chart, the first house might contain Aries (number one). In another chart, the first house might contain Capricorn (number ten). This depends entirely on birth time and place.

Why Rashis Change Every Two Hours

The Earth rotates continuously. As rotation occurs, different constellations appear to rise on the eastern horizon.

Twelve rashis exist. Twenty four hours exist in a day. A new rashi rises roughly every two hours. This is why birth time matters for determining the Lagna in traditional astrology.

BNN notes the rashis. They are essential for applying the two core rules. But BNN does not rely on the Lagna as a reference point. Jupiter's rashi becomes the anchor instead.

Rashi Lords

Every rashi has a ruling planet. This is fundamental in Vedic astrology.

The Sun rules Leo (number five). The Moon rules Cancer (number four). Mars rules Aries (one) and Scorpio (eight). Mercury rules Gemini (three) and Virgo (six). Jupiter rules Sagittarius (nine) and Pisces (twelve). Venus rules Taurus (two) and Libra (seven). Saturn rules Capricorn (ten) and Aquarius (eleven).

Rahu and Ketu rule no rashis. They are shadow planets without domains.

Knowing which planet rules which rashi becomes important when interpreting planetary strength and relationships. A planet placed in its own rashi is strong. A planet placed in a rashi ruled by its enemy faces challenge.

Part Three: The Nine Planets

Planets are the active agents in any chart. They perform the actions.

Vedic astrology uses nine planets. Seven are visible celestial bodies. Two are mathematical points representing the lunar nodes.

The nine are Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu.

In a North Indian chart, planets appear as names or abbreviations written inside the boxes. Each planet sits in a specific rashi, which is contained within a specific house.

The Core Significations of Each Planet

These meanings form the vocabulary of BNN prediction. When planets combine, their meanings join.

Sun. Father, soul, government, authority, power, fame, ego, leadership, right eye, bones, immunity.

Moon. Mother, mind, emotions, change, travel, food, water, public, left eye, chest area.

Mars. Energy, action, courage, younger siblings, husband (in female chart), land, property, surgery, accidents, blood, technical skills.

Mercury. Intelligence, communication, business, education, friends, relatives, speech, writing, logic, youthfulness.

Jupiter. Self (Jeevakaraka), wisdom, teacher, guide, religion, children, wealth, honor, respect, patience, law, optimism.

Venus. Money, luxury, beauty, relationships, wife (in male chart), vehicles, arts, desire, attraction, comfort.

Saturn. Career, profession, karma, delay, discipline, hardship, old age, labor, service, obstacles, endurance.

Rahu. Desire, illusion, foreign lands, unconventionality, expansion, obsession, disease, paternal grandparents, digital world.

Ketu. Detachment, spirituality, isolation, endings, occult, research, astrology itself, maternal grandparents, past life.

How to Read a Sample Chart

A simple example makes the process clear.

Imagine a North Indian chart where the topmost box (first house) contains the number five. Written inside that same box is the name "Jupiter."

What does this reveal?

First, the number five indicates the rashi is Leo. Leo is ruled by the Sun.

Second, the planet Jupiter is placed in Leo.

Third, in traditional terms, this person has Leo Lagna with Jupiter in the first house.

In Bhrigu Nandi Nadi (BNN) terms, Jupiter's position is noted. Since Jupiter occupies Leo (number five), Leo becomes the first house for Bhrigu Nandi Nadi (BNN) purposes, regardless of which box it sits in. Counting of all other houses proceeds from Leo.

Real charts contain multiple planets distributed across different boxes. The reading principle remains identical. Identify the number for the rashi. Note which planets sit there. Understand what each planet means.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Confusing houses and rashis.

Houses are fixed positions on the chart paper. Rashis are numbered one through twelve and move depending on birth time. The number in the box is the rashi, not the house number.

Counting houses clockwise.

In the North Indian chart, houses are always counted counterclockwise. The first house sits at the top. The second sits immediately to its left from the viewer's perspective. Follow the perimeter.

Thinking empty boxes mean nothing.

Empty boxes are normal. Nine planets exist. Twelve houses exist. Some houses will always be empty. This does not mean those areas of life are absent. The house still has a rashi and a ruling planet. Its condition is read through that lord.

Memorizing without understanding.

The goal is not to memorize every possible combination. The goal is to learn the significations of nine planets and combine them logically. This is the BNN method. It rewards understanding over rote learning.
