Every planet in Vedic astrology has a direction in which it feels most at home. The Sun is strongest at the top of the sky at noon, the Moon in the dark depth of night. Dig Bala (dig = direction, bala = strength) measures how close a planet is to that favoured direction in the birth chart. It is one of the six parts of Shadbala, Parashara's system of planetary strength, and it is one of the easiest to check by eye.
The four angular houses of the chart (the kendras) correspond to the four directions:
If you are new to the house groups, see Kendra Trikona and Dusthana Houses.
| Planet | Full Dig Bala in | Direction | No Dig Bala in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | 1st house | East | 7th house |
| Jupiter | 1st house | East | 7th house |
| Moon | 4th house | North | 10th house |
| Venus | 4th house | North | 10th house |
| Saturn | 7th house | West | 1st house |
| Sun | 10th house | South | 4th house |
| Mars | 10th house | South | 4th house |
The logic is easy to remember. Mercury and Jupiter, the planets of intelligence and wisdom, shine in the house of the self. The Moon and Venus, the planets of feeling and comfort, are at ease in the 4th, the house of home and happiness. Saturn, the planet of endurance and of other people, gains in the 7th. The Sun and Mars, the planets of authority and action, are strongest in the 10th, the house of career and public standing.
Dig Bala is not just "in the house or not". It is graded, from 0 to 60 virupas (60 virupas = 1 rupa), by how far the planet is from its weak point, the cusp opposite its strong house.
A planet exactly on its strong cusp is 180 degrees from its weak point and gets the full 60 virupas. A planet exactly on its weak cusp gets 0. A planet on one of the two cusps in between gets about 30.
Take a chart whose 4th cusp is at 100 degrees (10 degrees Cancer), so the 10th cusp is at 280 degrees (10 degrees Capricorn).
The same method works for every planet; only the weak point changes.
A planet with strong Dig Bala tends to express its nature openly and effectively. Some classic pictures:
A planet without Dig Bala (in the house opposite its strong one) is not "bad". It simply has to work harder to express itself in that area. The Sun in the 4th, for example, often describes someone whose authority shows at home or in private rather than in public; Saturn in the 1st gives a serious, hard-working temperament that matures with age.
When you judge whether the Lagna lord is strong, Dig Bala is one of the clearest checks. A Lagna lord in its own direction gives the person confidence and a sense of direction in life. The other checks are explained in how to know if your Lagna lord is strong.
Dig Bala is about position relative to the horizon and meridian only. A planet can have full Dig Bala and still be debilitated, combust or afflicted. Always read it together with sign dignity, aspects and the other strength factors; combustion, for instance, can reduce a planet that is otherwise well placed. Rahu and Ketu are not part of the classical Shadbala, so they have no Dig Bala in Parashara's scheme.
Dig Bala is directional strength: Mercury and Jupiter in the 1st, the Moon and Venus in the 4th, Saturn in the 7th, and the Sun and Mars in the 10th. It is measured from the planet's weak cusp, the opposite one, and divided by 3 to give 0 to 60 virupas. A planet with Dig Bala expresses itself confidently; one without it works harder in that area but is not harmed by this alone.
Dig Bala is directional strength. Each planet is strongest in one of the four angular houses: Mercury and Jupiter in the 1st (east), Moon and Venus in the 4th (north), Saturn in the 7th (west) and Sun and Mars in the 10th (south).
Measure the distance in degrees between the planet and the cusp of the house where it is weakest (the opposite of its strong house). Divide by 3. The result, up to 60 virupas, is its Dig Bala.
Not in the classical Shadbala of Parashara, which covers only the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn. Some later writers assign the nodes a direction, but there is no agreed rule.
No. Dig Bala is one of six strength sources. A planet in the house opposite its strong direction lacks this one kind of strength, but it can still be strong through sign, aspects and other factors.
