The twelve houses of a horoscope are not equal. Classical astrology sorts them into groups, and knowing which group a house belongs to tells you at a glance whether a planet there, or the lord of that house, tends to support you, test you or grow with time. These groups are behind almost every yoga, from Raja yoga to Viparita Raja yoga.
| Group | Houses | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Kendra (angles) | 1, 4, 7, 10 | Pillars of the chart: self, home, partner, career |
| Trikona (trines) | 1, 5, 9 | Fortune and merit: self, children and intellect, dharma |
| Dusthana | 6, 8, 12 | Difficult houses: obstacles, change, loss and release |
| Upachaya | 3, 6, 10, 11 | Houses of growth that improve with time |
| Maraka | 2, 7 | Houses studied for the end of life spans and for heavy periods |
| Panapara (succedent) | 2, 5, 8, 11 | Houses that follow the kendras |
| Apoklima (cadent) | 3, 6, 9, 12 | Houses that fall away from the kendras |
The 1st house (Lagna) is both a kendra and a trikona, which is why it is the most important house of all.
The kendras are the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses. They are sometimes called Vishnu sthanas, places of support and sustenance. Planets in kendras are prominent: they express themselves openly and strongly in life.
Kendradhipati dosha. Natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus, and also Mercury and the Moon) that rule kendras are said to lose some of their natural goodness for that Lagna, while natural malefics ruling kendras lose some of their harshness. This is about lordship, not placement: a benefic placed in a kendra is still welcome.
The trikonas are the 1st, 5th and 9th houses, also called Lakshmi sthanas, places of prosperity. The lords of trikonas are considered auspicious for every Lagna, whatever planet they are.
Raja yoga. When a kendra lord and a trikona lord are linked (conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange of signs), the classical result is rise in status and success. The more houses and the stronger the planets involved, the better the result.
When one planet rules both a kendra and a trikona for a Lagna, it is a yogakaraka, the best friend of that chart:
| Lagna | Yogakaraka | Houses ruled |
|---|---|---|
| Taurus | Saturn | 9th and 10th |
| Libra | Saturn | 4th and 5th |
| Cancer | Mars | 5th and 10th |
| Leo | Mars | 4th and 9th |
| Capricorn | Venus | 5th and 10th |
| Aquarius | Venus | 4th and 9th |
Other Lagnas have no single yogakaraka; for them, Raja yoga comes from two different planets joining. The yogakaraka's strength still matters: check its sign dignity (see exaltation, own sign and debilitation).
The 6th, 8th and 12th houses are the dusthanas. They describe what life asks us to face, but each has a constructive side:
Planets placed in dusthanas often work behind the scenes. Lords of dusthanas placed in other dusthanas can give Viparita Raja yoga, success that comes after or through a difficulty; the table for it is in effects of house lords in the 12 houses.
The 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses are upachayas, "houses that increase". Whatever they show tends to improve with age, effort and experience.
The 2nd and 7th houses (and their lords) are called maraka houses. In longevity studies they are examined for heavy periods. They are also the houses of family, wealth and partnership, so a maraka lord's dasa is not something to fear; it often simply brings changes in family or partnership matters.
When you look at any planet, ask three questions:
Start with your Lagna: if you are not sure of it, see how to find your Lagna.
Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are the chart's pillars; trikonas (1, 5, 9) its fortune; dusthanas (6, 8, 12) its tests, each with a constructive side; upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11) grow with time. A planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona is a yogakaraka, and kendra and trikona lords joining create Raja yoga.
The kendras (angles) are the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses. The trikonas (trines) are the 1st, 5th and 9th. The 1st house belongs to both groups.
No. They are called dusthanas because they deal with difficulties, but they also rule service and competition (6th), research and transformation (8th), and spirituality, foreign lands and rest (12th). Their results depend on the planets involved.
A planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona for a Lagna. Saturn is yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra Lagnas, Mars for Cancer and Leo, and Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius.
The 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses. They are houses of growth: their results improve with time and effort, and natural malefics placed there often do well.
