In Vedic astrology a planet influences not only the house it sits in but also certain houses it "looks at". This look is called drishti, or aspect. Aspects explain why a planet far away in the chart can still shape your marriage, career or home, and they are part of nearly every yoga and prediction.
This guide covers the full aspects every planet casts, the special aspects of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, how to count them correctly, and how to judge their effect.
Every planet aspects the house 7th from itself, the house directly opposite. A planet in the 1st house aspects the 7th; a planet in the 4th aspects the 10th; a planet in the 9th aspects the 3rd.
When counting, the planet's own house is 1. So from the 4th house: 4th (1), 5th (2), 6th (3), 7th (4), 8th (5), 9th (6), 10th (7).
Three planets have extra full-strength aspects:
| Planet | Full aspects (counted from its own house) |
|---|---|
| Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus | 7th only |
| Mars | 4th, 7th, 8th |
| Jupiter | 5th, 7th, 9th |
| Saturn | 3rd, 7th, 10th |
| Rahu, Ketu | Disputed (see below) |
Notice how Jupiter in the 3rd reaches both the 7th (marriage) and the 9th (fortune), and Saturn in the 10th reaches the 4th (home) and the 7th. This is why a single planet can colour several areas of life.
The nodes' aspects are disputed. Some astrologers give them the 7th aspect only; others add the 5th and 9th (like Jupiter); a few use other counts. Because the classical schools disagree, it is safer to judge Rahu and Ketu mainly by their house, sign, conjunctions and dispositor (the lord of the sign they occupy) and use their aspects only as a secondary factor.
The classical text Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra also describes weaker, partial aspects that every planet casts:
| Count from the planet | Strength |
|---|---|
| 3rd and 10th | one quarter |
| 5th and 9th | one half |
| 4th and 8th | three quarters |
| 7th | full |
The special aspects above are simply the cases where Mars, Jupiter and Saturn cast a full aspect on houses where other planets only cast a partial one. In everyday reading most astrologers use only the full aspects; partial aspects matter in strength calculations such as drik bala in Shadbala.
An aspect carries the nature of the planet casting it:
Two more factors decide the final result:
When two planets aspect each other, the link is strong. The common case is two planets opposite each other (1st and 7th from one another). Others include Mars and Saturn placed so that one's special aspect falls on the other. The classical Gaja Kesari yoga is built on Jupiter and the Moon being in kendras (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) from each other, which includes the mutual 7th aspect.
The Jaimini system uses a different method, rashi drishti (sign aspects):
Planets in a sign aspect whatever that sign aspects. Use sign aspects with Jaimini techniques and planetary aspects with Parashari ones; do not mix them in one judgement.
The Lagna is the most important point to check. Aspects on it shape personality, vitality and general direction in life. If you want to know how strongly your Lagna lord supports you, aspects to it are one of the checks in how to know if your Lagna lord is strong.
Every planet aspects the 7th house from itself. Mars adds the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, and Saturn the 3rd and 10th, always counting the planet's own house as 1. Rahu and Ketu's aspects are disputed. An aspect brings the aspecting planet's nature, strength and lordship to the house it falls on, with Jupiter's the most protective.
Every planet aspects the 7th house from where it sits. Mars also aspects the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, and Saturn the 3rd and 10th. These are counted from the planet's own house, which counts as 1.
This is disputed. Many astrologers give them the 7th aspect, and some also give them the 5th and 9th like Jupiter. Because the schools differ, careful astrologers lean on their conjunctions and dispositors more than on their aspects.
Jupiter's aspect is classically the most protective: it supports and improves the house or planet it aspects. Its final effect still depends on Jupiter's own strength and the houses it rules for that Lagna.
When two planets aspect each other, for example two planets opposite each other in the 1st and 7th from one another, it is a mutual aspect. It links the two planets strongly, almost like a conjunction.
