Some planets are good for you by nature, others by position. Vedic astrology adds a third idea: a planet becomes good or difficult for your Lagna depending on which houses it rules. The most valued of these functional roles is the yogakaraka, the planet that by itself produces Raja yoga.
The houses of a chart fall into groups. The kendras (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) are the pillars of action and achievement. The trikonas (1st, 5th, 9th) are the houses of merit, fortune and grace. A connection between the lord of a kendra and the lord of a trikona is the classical definition of a Raja yoga, a combination for rise and success. (The house groups are explained in Kendra Trikona and Dusthana Houses.)
Usually that connection needs two planets that join, aspect each other or exchange signs. A yogakaraka is the special case where one planet rules both a kendra and a trikona. The Raja yoga is built into that planet.
| Lagna | Yogakaraka | Houses ruled |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | None | (Sun rules the 5th, Jupiter the 9th and 12th, Saturn the 10th and 11th) |
| Taurus | Saturn | 9th (Capricorn) and 10th (Aquarius) |
| Gemini | None | (Venus rules the 5th and 12th, Saturn the 8th and 9th) |
| Cancer | Mars | 5th (Scorpio) and 10th (Aries) |
| Leo | Mars | 4th (Scorpio) and 9th (Aries) |
| Virgo | None | (Venus rules the 2nd and 9th, Mercury the 1st and 10th) |
| Libra | Saturn | 4th (Capricorn) and 5th (Aquarius) |
| Scorpio | None | (Moon rules the 9th, Sun the 10th, Jupiter the 2nd and 5th) |
| Sagittarius | None | (Sun rules the 9th, Mars the 5th and 12th, Jupiter the 1st and 4th) |
| Capricorn | Venus | 5th (Taurus) and 10th (Libra) |
| Aquarius | Venus | 4th (Taurus) and 9th (Libra) |
| Pisces | None | (Moon rules the 5th, Mars the 2nd and 9th, Jupiter the 1st and 10th) |
Only Saturn, Mars and Venus can be yogakarakas, because a planet must rule two signs that fall in a kendra and a trikona at the same time. The Sun and Moon rule one sign each. Mercury's two signs (Gemini, Virgo) and Jupiter's (Sagittarius, Pisces) are always a square apart, so when one of them is in a kendra the other is in a kendra too; they can never combine a kendra with the 5th or 9th.
The 1st house is both a kendra and a trikona, so the Lagna lord is always an important, auspicious planet for the chart, even when it also rules a difficult house (Mars for Aries rules the 8th too). Some writers therefore call the Lagna lord a yogakaraka as well. The traditional usage, followed here, keeps the word for a planet ruling the 4th, 7th or 10th and the 5th or 9th. Either way, a strong Lagna lord is a great asset; see how to know if your Lagna lord is strong.
Six Lagnas have no single yogakaraka. That does not make them weaker charts. Their Raja yogas are formed by two planets, for example:
Look for these planets joining, exchanging signs or aspecting each other. The effects of every house lord in every house are gathered in Effects of House Lords in the 12 Houses.
Having a yogakaraka is a promise; its strength decides how much is delivered. Check:
The Mahadasha or bhukti of a strong yogakaraka is often a turning point: promotion, property, recognition, or the start of a period of steady growth, depending on which houses it rules. For a Taurus Lagna, Saturn's dasa links fortune (9th) with career (10th); for a Leo Lagna, Mars's dasa links home and property (4th) with fortune (9th).
A yogakaraka is one planet ruling both a kendra (4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (5th, 9th): Saturn for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Cancer and Leo, Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius. The other six Lagnas form their Raja yogas through two planets instead. A yogakaraka gives its best when it is dignified, well placed and unafflicted, and its dasa is often one of the most productive periods of life.
A yogakaraka is a single planet that rules both a kendra (4th, 7th or 10th house) and a trikona (5th or 9th house) from the Lagna. Because it joins the two most important house groups in one planet, it is the best functional benefic for that Lagna.
Six: Saturn for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Cancer and Leo, and Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius. The other six Lagnas have no single planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona.
The 1st house counts as both a kendra and a trikona, so the Lagna lord is always auspicious for the chart. Most astrologers still reserve the word yogakaraka for a planet ruling the 4th, 7th or 10th together with the 5th or 9th.
It has the best potential, but it delivers according to its strength. A yogakaraka that is well placed and strong gives clear rise in its dasa; a weak or afflicted one gives its results more slowly or partly.
