Finding a debilitated planet in your chart can feel like bad news. A debilitated planet (neecha) sits in the sign where it is weakest. But classical astrology also teaches that debilitation can be cancelled. When it is, the planet recovers, and the combination is called Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga: a rise that comes after difficulty.
This guide lists the cancellation rules, gives a ready table for each planet, and shows how to check them step by step.
| Planet | Debilitated in | Exalted in |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Libra | Aries |
| Moon | Scorpio | Taurus |
| Mars | Cancer | Capricorn |
| Mercury | Pisces | Virgo |
| Jupiter | Capricorn | Cancer |
| Venus | Virgo | Pisces |
| Saturn | Aries | Libra |
The debilitation sign is always the 7th from the exaltation sign. Exact degrees and the other dignities are in our exaltation and debilitation guide.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika give several conditions. The most widely used are:
Any one of these is a cancellation. Several together make the yoga stronger.
| Debilitated planet | Lord of debilitation sign | Planet exalted there | Lord of its exaltation sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun in Libra | Venus | Saturn | Mars |
| Moon in Scorpio | Mars | (none) | Venus |
| Mars in Cancer | Moon | Jupiter | Saturn |
| Mercury in Pisces | Jupiter | Venus | Mercury itself |
| Jupiter in Capricorn | Saturn | Mars | Moon |
| Venus in Virgo | Mercury | Mercury | Jupiter |
| Saturn in Aries | Mars | Sun | Venus |
To use it: find your debilitated planet's row, then check whether any planet named in that row is in a kendra from your Lagna or from your Moon.
Aries Lagna, Jupiter in Capricorn in the 10th house. Saturn (lord of Capricorn) is in Libra, the 7th house.
Two conditions are met. Jupiter's debilitation is cancelled, and since it sits in the 10th house of career, the classical reading is a career that rises after an early struggle.
Taurus Lagna, Venus in Virgo in the 5th house. Mercury (lord of Virgo, and also the planet exalted there) is in Leo, the 4th house.
Venus, the Lagna lord here, recovers its strength.
Gemini Lagna, Saturn in Aries in the 11th house. Mars (lord of Aries) is in Virgo (4th from Lagna). That is a kendra from the Lagna, so even here the debilitation is cancelled. Most debilitated planets in real charts meet at least one condition, which is why careful astrologers check before calling any planet "weak".
For another yoga where Jupiter's dignity decides the result, see Gaja Kesari yoga. For a wider list, see planetary combinations in Vedic astrology.
Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga is the cancellation of a planet's debilitation. Check whether the debilitation-sign lord, the planet exalted there, or the exaltation-sign lord is in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon; whether the debilitation-sign lord aspects the planet; and whether the planet is exalted in the navamsa. A cancelled planet gives its results after effort, often with a real rise in its dasa.
Neecha means debilitation and Bhanga means cancellation. When a debilitated planet meets one of the classical cancellation conditions, its weakness is lifted, and texts say it can even give rise and success after an early struggle.
Check whether the lord of the debilitation sign, or the planet exalted in that sign, is in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon; whether the debilitation-sign lord aspects the planet; and whether the planet is exalted in the navamsa. Any one of these is a classical cancellation.
No. It removes the weakness of debilitation. The planet then works well, often after effort or delay, but it is not the same as an exalted planet.
None of the seven classical planets is exalted in Scorpio, so for the Moon that test does not apply. Use the other conditions, such as Mars (lord of Scorpio) in a kendra or the Moon exalted in the navamsa.
