Every zodiac sign belongs to one of three groups according to how it moves: movable, fixed or dual. In Sanskrit they are chara (moving), sthira (steady) and dwiswabhava (two-natured). It is one of the first classifications a student of astrology learns, and it keeps turning up later in matching, in choosing a good time, and inside several calculations.
The pattern simply repeats around the zodiac: movable, fixed, dual, movable, fixed, dual, and so on from Aries.
| Group | Signs | Key idea |
|---|---|---|
| Movable (chara) | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn | Starts, moves, changes |
| Fixed (sthira) | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius | Holds, continues, resists change |
| Dual (dwiswabhava) | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | Adapts, mixes both natures |
Each group has four signs, one of each element: one fire, one earth, one air and one water sign.
| Fire | Earth | Air | Water | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Movable | Aries | Capricorn | Libra | Cancer |
| Fixed | Leo | Taurus | Aquarius | Scorpio |
| Dual | Sagittarius | Virgo | Gemini | Pisces |
The four signs of a group are always in kendras (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th) from one another. So if your Lagna is movable, all four of your kendra houses fall in movable signs.
Western astrology uses the same groups under the names cardinal, fixed and mutable.
Movable signs begin things. They are quick to act, like change, and are comfortable with travel and new places. The risk is leaving things unfinished. The form of the activity follows the element: Aries acts, Cancer cares and protects, Libra connects and negotiates, Capricorn organises and builds.
Fixed signs keep things going. They are steady, loyal, patient and hard to push. They finish what they start and prefer the familiar. The risk is stubbornness. Taurus holds resources, Leo holds authority, Scorpio holds feelings and secrets, Aquarius holds ideas and principles.
A dual sign has both natures. The tradition says its first half is closer to the fixed sign before it and its second half closer to the movable sign after it. Dual signs adapt, learn, teach and communicate, and they see both sides of a question. The risk is indecision. Gemini adapts through speech, Virgo through analysis, Sagittarius through belief and teaching, Pisces through feeling and imagination.
The Lagna. The group of the rising sign colours the whole approach to life: a movable Lagna leans toward initiative, a fixed Lagna toward stability, a dual Lagna toward flexibility. If you are not sure of your rising sign, see How to Find Your Lagna.
The Moon. The Moon's sign shows the habit of the mind: restless and responsive in a movable sign, settled in a fixed sign, changeable and curious in a dual sign.
The balance of planets. Count how many planets are in each group. A chart with most planets in movable signs is full of activity and change; one with most in fixed signs is steady and persistent; one with most in dual signs is versatile. Classical texts even name these three patterns as yogas: Rajju (all planets in movable signs, a life of movement), Musala (all in fixed signs, steadiness and pride of place) and Nala (all in dual signs, skill and versatility). They are three of the Nabhasa yogas.
A single house. The group of the sign on a house says how that matter behaves. A movable sign on the 10th suggests changes of role or work that involves movement; a fixed sign suggests long service in one line; a dual sign suggests two lines of work or a career of learning and teaching. Treat this as one hint among many.
No group is better than another. A team needs someone to start, someone to sustain and someone to adjust.
The rising sign at the moment of an event is chosen to suit the purpose:
In question charts the rising sign hints at how the matter will go: a movable sign shows change or movement, a fixed sign shows the situation staying as it is, and a dual sign shows a mixed or delayed outcome, leaning one way in its first half and the other in its second.
The house of obstruction depends on the group of the Lagna: the 11th house for movable Lagnas, the 9th for fixed Lagnas and the 7th for dual Lagnas. This is explained in Badhaka House and Badhaka Lord.
Besides the planetary aspects of the Parashari system, Jaimini astrology uses aspects between signs, and they are defined entirely by these groups:
For example, Aries (movable) aspects Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, but not Taurus, which is next to it.
Several divisional charts start their count from a different sign for each group. In the D16 (Shodasamsa), the parts of a movable sign are counted from Aries, of a fixed sign from Leo and of a dual sign from Sagittarius. The D20 and D45 use the same idea. And in the D4 Chaturthamsa a planet always stays in a sign of the same group as its rasi sign.
Jaimini's sign-based dashas also look at the group of a sign when deciding the order in which sub-periods run. A beginner does not need the details, only the knowledge that this classification is built into the method.
Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are movable; Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius are fixed; Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are dual. Movable signs initiate, fixed signs sustain and dual signs adapt. Read the group of the Lagna and the Moon for temperament and the balance of planets for the style of the whole chart, and remember that the same three groups decide the badhaka house, Jaimini's sign aspects, the choice of a rising sign for an event and the starting point of several divisional charts.
Movable signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. Dual signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces.
A movable Lagna leans toward action, initiative and change. Such people like to start things and are comfortable with travel and new situations.
A dual sign has a mixed nature, partly movable and partly fixed. It is adaptable and thoughtful, good at learning and at seeing both sides of a matter.
Yes, they are the same three groups of four signs. Vedic astrology calls them chara, sthira and dwiswabhava, and uses them in several calculations as well as for temperament.
