Vimshottari dasha is the most widely used timing system in Vedic astrology. It divides life into planetary periods called dasas (or mahadashas), each ruled by one of the nine planets, and each split further into bhuktis (antardashas). Knowing how it is calculated helps you check any horoscope and understand why your dasa started when it did.
This guide explains the 120-year cycle, how the starting dasa comes from your birth star, how to work out the balance of dasa at birth, and how bhuktis are timed.
"Vimshottari" means "one hundred and twenty". The full cycle of nine dasas adds up to 120 years, in this fixed order:
| Order | Dasa lord | Years |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ketu | 7 |
| 2 | Venus | 20 |
| 3 | Sun | 6 |
| 4 | Moon | 10 |
| 5 | Mars | 7 |
| 6 | Rahu | 18 |
| 7 | Jupiter | 16 |
| 8 | Saturn | 19 |
| 9 | Mercury | 17 |
| Total | 120 |
After Mercury the sequence returns to Ketu. Nobody starts at Ketu by default: your starting point depends on the Moon.
The zodiac's 360 degrees are divided into 27 nakshatras of 13 degrees 20 minutes each. The nine dasa lords rule the nakshatras in the same order as the table above, repeating three times:
| Dasa lord | Nakshatras |
|---|---|
| Ketu | Ashwini, Magha, Moola |
| Venus | Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha |
| Sun | Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha |
| Moon | Rohini, Hasta, Shravana |
| Mars | Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta |
| Rahu | Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha |
| Jupiter | Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada |
| Saturn | Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada |
| Mercury | Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati |
The lord of the Moon's nakshatra at birth rules your first dasa.
You are rarely born at the very start of a nakshatra. The Moon has already crossed part of it, so only part of the first dasa remains. The rule:
Balance = (degrees of the nakshatra still to be crossed / 13 degrees 20 minutes) x years of the dasa lord
Suppose the Moon is at 15 degrees Taurus (sidereal).
So this person is born with Moon dasa, balance 6 years 3 months. After that come Mars (7 years), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16), Saturn (19), Mercury (17), Ketu (7), Venus (20) and Sun (6), in that order.
Add each period to the birth date to get the calendar dates when each dasa begins.
Each mahadasha is divided into nine bhuktis. The first bhukti belongs to the mahadasha lord itself; the rest follow the same Ketu-to-Mercury order from there. The length of each:
Bhukti length (years) = mahadasha years x bhukti lord's years / 120
The nine bhuktis always add back up to the full mahadasha (here 16 years). Each bhukti can be split again the same way into antara periods (pratyantardashas) for finer timing.
If you are born part-way through a dasa, the bhuktis already "used up" before birth are simply skipped; the running bhukti is found by counting the elapsed part of the dasa through the bhukti list.
Two correct calculations may still differ by a few days because of:
A difference of months, not days, usually means the birth time or the ayanamsa setting is wrong.
The calculation only tells you when each planet's period runs. What it brings depends on the dasa lord's house, sign, strength, the houses it owns and its relationship with the Lagna. The same Saturn dasa can be productive for one chart and demanding for another. For balanced readings of two of the longest periods, see Rahu mahadasha effects and Saturn mahadasha effects.
Vimshottari is not the only dasa system. Some charts are also checked with sign-based or nakshatra-pada-based systems; for one of these, see what is Kalachakra dasa.
Vimshottari dasha is a 120-year cycle of nine planetary periods. Your first dasa is ruled by the lord of the Moon's birth nakshatra, and its balance is the unfinished fraction of that nakshatra multiplied by the lord's years. Bhuktis are found with mahadasha years x bhukti years / 120, starting with the mahadasha lord. Software such as Sithars Astrology does this to the day, but knowing the method lets you check any chart yourself.
Find the nakshatra (birth star) the Moon occupies at birth. Its lord rules the first dasa. The part of the nakshatra the Moon has still to cross, as a fraction of 13 degrees 20 minutes, multiplied by that lord's dasa years gives the balance of dasa at birth. The other dasas follow in a fixed order.
Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17, a total of 120 years. After Mercury the cycle starts again with Ketu.
Multiply the mahadasha years by the bhukti lord's years and divide by 120. The answer is in years. The first bhukti in any mahadasha belongs to the mahadasha lord itself, and the rest follow the same order.
Small differences come from the ayanamsa used, the exact Moon longitude, the birth time and the length of year used to turn fractions into days. A few days of difference is normal; months of difference usually mean a wrong birth time or ayanamsa setting.
