Among the divisional charts (vargas), the Saptamsa, or D7, is the one Sage Parashara gives to children and grandchildren. Sapta means seven: each sign is divided into seven equal parts. It is read alongside the 5th house of the rasi chart to add detail about children, the bond with them, and more broadly what a person creates and leaves behind.
Each sign of 30 degrees is divided into seven parts of 4┬░17'09" (30 / 7 degrees).
| Part | From | To |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0┬░00' | 4┬░17' |
| 2 | 4┬░17' | 8┬░34' |
| 3 | 8┬░34' | 12┬░51' |
| 4 | 12┬░51' | 17┬░09' |
| 5 | 17┬░09' | 21┬░26' |
| 6 | 21┬░26' | 25┬░43' |
| 7 | 25┬░43' | 30┬░00' |
Then the rule depends on whether the sign is odd or even:
Jupiter at 20┬░ Gemini.
Moon at 10┬░ Taurus.
Lagna at 27┬░ Cancer.
A quick check you can use: the first part of an odd sign and the last part of an even sign always fall in the sign itself.
One principle comes first: no chart can promise or rule out children. Whether and when a couple has a child depends on health, circumstances and choice, and those questions belong with a doctor as well as an astrologer. The D7 describes tendencies and periods of emphasis. It should never be read with fear.
1. Start with the rasi chart. The 5th house, its lord, planets in or aspecting the 5th, and Jupiter, the natural karaka for children. Many astrologers also look at the 5th from the Moon and the 9th house (the 5th from the 5th). A divisional chart refines the rasi chart; it does not overrule it.
2. The D7 Lagna and its lord. A D7 Lagna lord in its own or exalted sign, or in a kendra or trikona of the D7, is read as a supportive foundation for matters of children.
3. The 5th house of the D7 and its lord. This is the house of children inside the chart of children, so it gets special weight. Benefics here, or a well-placed lord, are encouraging.
4. Jupiter in the D7. Its sign and house show how freely Jupiter can give its blessings in this area.
5. The rasi 5th lord in the D7. See where the 5th lord of the main chart falls in the D7 and how strong it is there.
6. Both partners. Children are a shared matter. An astrologer always looks at the charts of both parents; a strong indication in one chart supports the couple.
7. Timing. Periods connected with children are usually the dashas and sub-periods of the 5th lord, planets in the 5th, Jupiter, or the D7 Lagna lord, supported by Jupiter's transit to the 5th house, its lord or their trines.
Charts are rarely all strong or all weak. Suppose the rasi 5th lord is ordinary by sign but falls in its own sign in the D7: the D7 lifts the reading, suggesting that the bond with children turns out better than the main chart alone implies. The reverse can also happen, and then the practical reading is simply that this area asks for more patience, attention and time, as many good things do.
Parashara names a presiding quality for each of the seven parts. For odd signs they are, in order, Kshara (salt water), Ksheera (milk), Dadhi (curd), Ghrita (ghee), Ikshurasa (sugarcane juice), Madya (wine) and Shuddha Jala (pure water); for even signs the order is reversed. Some astrologers use them to describe the flavour of a placement, especially of the D7 Lagna and the 5th lord.
The Lagna takes about two hours to cross a sign, so each of the seven parts rises for only about 17 minutes. A birth time that is uncertain by a quarter of an hour can change the D7 Lagna. Compare this with the D3 Drekkana, whose Lagna lasts about 40 minutes, and the Navamsa Lagna, which lasts about 13. If the birth time is approximate, rely more on the planets' D7 signs, which do not depend on the minute of birth, than on the D7 houses.
Each divisional chart has its own subject: D9 for marriage and inner strength, the D10 Dasamsa for profession, D7 for children. They are used the same way: begin with the house and its karaka in the rasi chart, then see whether the divisional chart confirms, strengthens or tones down what you found.
The Saptamsa divides each sign into seven parts of 4┬░17'. Count the parts from the sign itself for odd signs and from the 7th sign for even signs to place each planet in the D7. Read the D7 Lagna, its 5th house and Jupiter together with the 5th house of the rasi chart, in both partners' charts, for the theme of children and creative legacy. Treat it as a refinement that describes tendencies and timing, never as a promise or a verdict.
The Saptamsa or D7 chart is a divisional chart made by dividing each sign into seven equal parts. It is read for children, the relationship with them, and one's creative legacy.
Each sign is divided into seven parts of 4 degrees 17 minutes 9 seconds. For odd signs the parts are counted from the sign itself; for even signs they are counted from the 7th sign from it.
No chart can promise or rule out children. D7 describes tendencies and timing, and questions about having children belong with a doctor as well as an astrologer.
Yes. The D7 Lagna changes about every 17 minutes, so a birth time that is off by a quarter of an hour can change it.
