The Siddhamsa, or D24, is the divisional chart of learning. Its formal name is Chaturvimsamsa, "the twenty-fourth part", because each sign is divided into 24 equal parts. Sage Parashara gives it to vidya: education, knowledge and the mastery of a subject. Siddha means accomplished, and the chart is read for how a person learns and how far their learning matures into real skill.
Each sign of 30 degrees is divided into 24 parts of 1°15'. The starting point depends on whether the sign is odd or even:
Leo is the Sun's sign and Cancer is the Moon's, so the count always begins from one of the two luminaries. Because there are 24 parts and 12 signs, the count goes round the zodiac exactly twice.
To find the part number, divide the degrees within the sign by 1.25 and take the next whole number. For example 10° / 1.25 = 8, so 10° is the start of the 9th part.
| Parts | Degrees | Parts | Degrees |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 0°00' to 5°00' | 13 to 16 | 15°00' to 20°00' |
| 5 to 8 | 5°00' to 10°00' | 17 to 20 | 20°00' to 25°00' |
| 9 to 12 | 10°00' to 15°00' | 21 to 24 | 25°00' to 30°00' |
Mercury at 10° Gemini.
Jupiter at 3° Pisces.
Moon at 16° Taurus.
Lagna at 29° Libra.
A quick check: the first part of every odd sign is Leo and its last part is Cancer; the first part of every even sign is Cancer and its last part is Gemini.
A principle before reading: a chart shows leaning and timing, not a mark sheet. It should never be used to label a child as bright or weak. Every chart has its own way of learning, and effort, teaching and opportunity decide the result.
1. Start with the rasi chart. The 4th house shows schooling, the 5th intelligence and the power to grasp, the 2nd early learning and speech, and the 9th higher education. Mercury is the natural karaka of learning and Jupiter of wisdom. The D24 refines what these show.
2. The D24 Lagna and its lord. A D24 Lagna lord in its own or exalted sign, or in a kendra or trikona of the D24, gives a steady base for study.
3. Mercury and Jupiter in the D24. Their signs and houses show how freely the two planets of knowledge work. Mercury strong favours analysis, language, mathematics and commerce; Jupiter strong favours philosophy, law, teaching and advisory work.
4. The 4th, 5th and 9th houses of the D24 and their lords. Benefics there, or strong lords, support education at the matching level.
5. The rasi 4th and 5th lords in the D24. See where these planets fall in the D24 and how strong they are.
6. The planets that stand out. A strong planet in the D24 points to its own fields: the Sun to administration and medicine, the Moon to care and the humanities, Mars to engineering and technical work, Venus to the arts and design, Saturn to research, structure and long, patient study.
7. Timing. Education usually moves forward in the dashas and sub-periods of the 4th, 5th and 9th lords, Mercury, Jupiter or the D24 Lagna lord. A break in study often falls in a period unrelated to these; it is usually a pause, not an end.
Suppose Mercury is weak by sign in the rasi chart but falls in its own sign in the D24. The reading improves: the person may not shine in quick tests, yet learns thoroughly and becomes genuinely skilled over time. The reverse case, a bright Mercury in the rasi chart that is weak in the D24, often describes quick understanding that needs discipline to become depth.
The Lagna takes about two hours to cross a sign, so each of the 24 parts rises for only about 5 minutes. The D24 Lagna is therefore much more sensitive than the D12 Dwadasamsa (about 10 minutes) or the Hora D2 (about an hour). Unless the birth time is known to the minute, rely on the D24 signs of Mercury, Jupiter and the house lords rather than on the D24 houses.
Education and career are closely linked, so the D24 is usually read together with the D10 Dasamsa: the D24 for what a person learns, the D10 for how they use it. For the same reason the Business and Career report in Sithars Astrology includes the D24 among its divisional charts.
The Siddhamsa divides each sign into 24 parts of 1°15', counted from Leo for odd signs and from Cancer for even signs. Read the D24 Lagna, Mercury, Jupiter and the 4th, 5th and 9th houses together with the same factors in the rasi chart for education and the growth of skill. Because its Lagna changes every five minutes, trust the planets' signs more than the houses unless the birth time is exact, and use the chart to encourage a student's natural way of learning.
The Siddhamsa, also called Chaturvimsamsa or D24, is a divisional chart made by dividing each sign into 24 parts of 1 degree 15 minutes. It is read for education, learning and the growth of knowledge and skill.
Each sign is divided into 24 parts of 1 degree 15 minutes. For odd signs the parts are counted from Leo, and for even signs they are counted from Cancer.
It can show natural leanings, for example toward analysis, language, technical work or the arts. The choice of subject should also rest on the student's interest, results and practical guidance.
Very accurate. The D24 Lagna changes about every 5 minutes, so the houses of this chart are reliable only when the birth time is known to the minute.
