Of all the Raja Yogas formed by house lords, one pair is placed first by tradition: the lord of the 9th house together with the lord of the 10th house. The 9th is dharma, right conduct and fortune. The 10th is karma, action and career. Adhipati means lord. So Dharma Karmadhipati Yoga is simply "the yoga of the lords of dharma and karma".
It is a special case of the general rule set out in Kendra Trikona Raja Yoga Explained: the 9th is the strongest trikona and the 10th the strongest kendra.
The 9th lord and the 10th lord must be related in one of these ways:
A good 10th house gives work and position. A good 9th house gives luck, guidance and the sense that one's work has a purpose. When their lords join:
| Lagna | 9th lord | 10th lord | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Jupiter | Saturn | Saturn also rules the 11th, Jupiter the 12th |
| Taurus | Saturn | Saturn | One planet rules both |
| Gemini | Saturn | Jupiter | Saturn also rules the 8th, Jupiter the 7th |
| Cancer | Jupiter | Mars | Mars is the yogakaraka (5th and 10th) |
| Leo | Mars | Venus | Mars is the yogakaraka (4th and 9th) |
| Virgo | Venus | Mercury | Mercury is also the Lagna lord |
| Libra | Mercury | Moon | Mercury also rules the 12th |
| Scorpio | Moon | Sun | The two lights |
| Sagittarius | Sun | Mercury | Mercury also rules the 7th |
| Capricorn | Mercury | Venus | Venus is the yogakaraka (5th and 10th) |
| Aquarius | Venus | Mars | Venus is the yogakaraka (4th and 9th) |
| Pisces | Mars | Jupiter | Jupiter is also the Lagna lord |
The idea of a yogakaraka is explained in Yogakaraka Planet for Each Lagna.
Taurus. Saturn rules both houses, so every Taurus Lagna chart carries the yoga in seed form. Whether it grows depends on Saturn alone: his sign, his house, his freedom from combustion and the planets with him.
Aries and Gemini. The pair is Jupiter and Saturn. These two slow planets come together only about once in twenty years, and stand opposite each other about ten years after that. So the conjunction and opposition forms of this yoga are found only in people born in certain years. For Gemini, both planets also rule less helpful houses, and the results come with delays.
Virgo, Sagittarius and Capricorn. One of the pair is Mercury, and the other is Venus or the Sun. Mercury is never more than about 28┬░ from the Sun, and Venus never more than about 47┬░. These planets are often in the same sign, so the conjunction form is common for these Lagnas. The thing to check is combustion: a yoga formed by a planet burnt by the Sun gives much less. See Combustion of Planets in Vedic Astrology. For Sagittarius, the Sun and Mercury together also form Budha Aditya Yoga.
Scorpio. The pair is the Moon and the Sun. Their conjunction is a new moon birth, when the Moon has little light, so the yoga is present but the Moon's share is weak. Their opposition is a full moon birth, with the Moon at her brightest. For Scorpio Lagna, a full moon across a good pair of houses is a fine form of this yoga.
Cancer, Leo, Capricorn and Aquarius. One of the two lords is already the yogakaraka. When he joins the other lord, three good houses are tied together.
Leo Lagna, conjunction. Mars (9th lord) and Venus (10th lord) are together in Taurus, the 10th house. Venus is in her own sign in the house of career, joined by the lord of fortune, who is also the yogakaraka. This is a strong and visible form.
Pisces Lagna, exchange. Mars (9th lord) is in Sagittarius, the 10th house, and Jupiter (10th lord) is in Scorpio, the 9th house. Each is in the other's sign and the two are friends. Jupiter is also the Lagna lord, so the person, the fortune and the career are bound together.
Aquarius Lagna, placement. Venus (9th lord) is alone in Scorpio, the 10th house, and Mars (10th lord) is elsewhere. The lord of fortune sits in the house of career. This is the lighter form: helpful, and stronger still if Mars is well placed.
The yoga shows most in the dasha of one lord and the sub-period of the other. If neither dasha falls between about the ages of 20 and 60, the yoga may show as general good standing without a marked peak. How dashas are counted is explained in Vimshottari Dasha Calculation Explained.
Dharma Karmadhipati Yoga forms when the 9th lord and the 10th lord are conjunct, in mutual aspect or in exchange, or when one occupies the other's house. It joins fortune with work and is counted first among the Raja Yogas of house lords. Its quality depends on the dignity of the two planets, their other lordships, the house where they meet and the timing of their dashas.
It is the Raja Yoga formed when the lord of the 9th house (dharma) and the lord of the 10th house (karma) are related by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange of signs, or when each is placed in the other's house.
For Taurus Lagna, Saturn rules both the 9th and the 10th houses, so one planet carries the whole yoga. Its results then depend entirely on how Saturn is placed.
Most astrologers accept it as a form of the yoga, since the lord of fortune occupies the house of career. The full form is the two lords joined, in mutual aspect or exchanging signs.
Mainly in the dasha of one of the two lords and the sub-period of the other, especially when these fall during the working years.
