Budha Aditya yoga joins two planets of intelligence and authority: Budha (Mercury), the planet of reasoning, speech and skill, and Aditya (the Sun), the planet of self, status and leadership. When they share a sign, classical texts describe a person who is clever, capable and recognised for their ability. Some texts call it Nipuna yoga, the "yoga of the skilful".
Budha Aditya yoga forms when the Sun and Mercury are in the same sign of the birth chart. That is the whole basic rule.
The Sun is at 10 degrees Gemini and Mercury at 26 degrees Gemini. Both are in Gemini, so the yoga is present. Mercury is in its own sign and 16 degrees from the Sun, so it is not combust: a good-quality Budha Aditya.
Mercury orbits close to the Sun. Seen from the Earth, it is never more than about 28 degrees away. So Mercury is always either in the Sun's sign or in the sign just before or after it. In a large share of charts it shares the Sun's sign.
When Mercury is in the next or previous sign instead, it forms the Sun yogas Vesi or Vosi (see Vesi, Vosi and Ubhayachari yoga).
Because it is common, astrologers grade the yoga rather than simply announce it.
A planet very close to the Sun is called combust (asta). Its light is hidden by the Sun's, and its own significations are weakened. For Mercury the usual classical limits are:
| Mercury | Combust within |
|---|---|
| Direct | about 14 degrees of the Sun |
| Retrograde | about 12 degrees of the Sun |
So a Budha Aditya yoga with Mercury 3 degrees from the Sun is weaker than one with Mercury 18 degrees away. Some astrologers say Mercury suffers less from combustion than other planets because it is always near the Sun, but most still prefer a wider gap.
| House | Typical expression |
|---|---|
| 1st | Sharp, confident personality; recognised for intelligence |
| 2nd | Good speech, skill with numbers and money, family support |
| 3rd | Writing, media, communication, short travel for work |
| 4th | Education, property, a learned or respected home |
| 5th | Intelligence, success in study and exams, good advice |
| 7th | Business partnerships, a capable partner, success in dealing with the public |
| 9th | Higher learning, respect from teachers, interest in philosophy |
| 10th | Career in administration, accounts, IT, law or government; public recognition |
| 11th | Gains through networks and intellect |
| 6th, 8th, 12th | Still clever, but energy goes into competition, research or work behind the scenes |
These are tendencies. The full house reading depends on the Lagna, the lords involved and the rest of the chart. For the dignities of each planet, see the exaltation and debilitation table.
Virgo Lagna. The Sun and Mercury are both in Virgo in the 1st house. Mercury is at 20 degrees and the Sun at 2 degrees.
This is a strong yoga: a capable, analytical person, likely to be recognised for skill, especially in Mercury's dasa.
Pisces Lagna. The Sun is at 15 degrees Pisces and Mercury at 18 degrees Pisces.
The person may still be intelligent, but the yoga gives modest results unless Mercury's debilitation is cancelled.
Budha Aditya (Nipuna) yoga is the Sun and Mercury in the same sign. It is common, so judge it by Mercury's distance from the Sun (combustion), the dignity of both planets, the house it falls in and the running dasa. A strong form shows as intelligence, good speech and recognition for skill.
Budha Aditya (also called Budhaditya or Nipuna) yoga forms when the Sun and Mercury are in the same sign. It is linked with intelligence, skill, good speech and recognition for one's ability.
Yes. Mercury never moves more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, so the two share a sign in a large share of charts. The yoga is judged by its quality, not just its presence.
It weakens it. When Mercury is within about 14 degrees of the Sun (12 when retrograde) it is classically combust. The yoga works best when Mercury is a little further away and in a good sign.
It is traditionally strongest in the kendras and trikonas, especially the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th and 10th houses, and in signs where Mercury or the Sun is strong, such as Virgo, Gemini, Leo or Aries.
