The Chaturthamsa, or D4, is the divisional chart of the 4th house. Chatur means four: each sign is divided into four equal parts. Sage Parashara gives it to bhagya, a person's fortune and well-being, and astrologers read it mainly for home, land, property, vehicles and the feeling of being settled. It is also called Turyamsa.
Each sign of 30 degrees is divided into four parts of 7°30'. The parts are given to the four kendras counted from the sign itself.
| Part | From | To | Goes to |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0°00' | 7°30' | The same sign |
| 2 | 7°30' | 15°00' | The 4th sign from it |
| 3 | 15°00' | 22°30' | The 7th sign from it |
| 4 | 22°30' | 30°00' | The 10th sign from it |
The rule is the same for all twelve signs. There is no odd and even difference.
Venus at 5° Taurus. 5° is in the 1st part, so Venus stays in Taurus in D4.
Lagna at 10° Virgo. 10° is in the 2nd part. The 4th sign from Virgo is Sagittarius: Virgo (1), Libra (2), Scorpio (3), Sagittarius (4). The D4 Lagna is Sagittarius.
Mars at 20° Aries. 20° is in the 3rd part. The 7th sign from Aries is Libra. Mars is in Libra in D4.
Moon at 25° Cancer. 25° is in the 4th part. The 10th sign from Cancer is Aries. The Moon is in Aries in D4.
A useful check: a planet in D4 is always in a kendra (the same sign, or the 4th, 7th or 10th) from its rasi sign. A movable sign therefore always gives a movable D4 sign, a fixed sign a fixed one, and a dual sign a dual one.
One principle first: a chart shows tendency and timing, not a title deed. Whether a person buys property depends on income, family circumstances and choice. The D4 shows how naturally this area of life flows and when it comes into focus.
1. Start with the rasi chart. The 4th house, its lord, planets in or aspecting the 4th, and the natural significators: Mars for land and buildings, Venus for vehicles and comforts, the Moon for home and peace of mind. These natural karakas are the foundation. The divisional chart refines what the rasi chart promises.
2. The D4 Lagna and its lord. A D4 Lagna lord in its own or exalted sign, or in a kendra or trikona of the D4, gives a firm base for property and home matters.
3. The 4th house of the D4 and its lord. This is the house of home inside the chart of home. Benefics here, or a well-placed lord, are encouraging.
4. The rasi 4th lord in the D4. See which sign and house the 4th lord of the main chart occupies in the D4. Own sign, exaltation or a friendly sign strengthens the promise.
5. Mars and Venus in the D4. Mars well placed supports land and construction; Venus well placed supports vehicles, furnishings and comfort.
6. Timing. Property events usually cluster in the dasha and bhukti of the 4th lord, planets in the 4th, the D4 Lagna lord, or Mars and Venus when they are connected with the 4th house, often supported by Jupiter's or Saturn's transit over the 4th house or its lord.
Suppose the rasi chart has the 4th lord in the 12th house, which on its own suggests living away from the birthplace or spending on property. If that planet is in its own sign in the D4, the reading improves: the person may well own a good home, only away from where they were born. The reverse case, a strong 4th lord in the rasi chart that is weak in the D4, usually means property comes with more effort, paperwork or delay than expected. Neither is a reason for worry; both simply say where care is needed.
Parashara names a presiding sage for each of the four parts: Sanaka, Sananda, Sanatkumara and Sanatana, the four eternal child-sages. They are the same for every sign, in this order. Some astrologers use them to describe the quality of the D4 Lagna.
The Lagna takes about two hours to cross a sign, so each quarter rises for about 30 minutes. The D4 is therefore less sensitive than the D7 Saptamsa (about 17 minutes) and more sensitive than the Hora D2 (about an hour). If the birth time is only roughly known, rely on the planets' D4 signs more than on the D4 houses.
Each divisional chart looks at one area of life: the D3 Drekkana for siblings and effort, D4 for home and property, D7 for children, the D10 Dasamsa for profession. The method is always the same: begin with the house and its karaka in the rasi chart, then see whether the divisional chart confirms, strengthens or tones down what you found.
The Chaturthamsa divides each sign into four parts of 7°30', given to the sign itself and the 4th, 7th and 10th signs from it. Read the D4 Lagna, its 4th house, the rasi 4th lord, Mars and Venus together with the 4th house of the main chart for home, property, vehicles and contentment. Use it to understand tendencies and likely periods, and combine it with practical planning.
The Chaturthamsa or D4 chart is a divisional chart made by dividing each sign into four parts of 7 degrees 30 minutes. It is read for home, land, property, vehicles and one's general fortune and contentment.
The four parts of a sign go to the sign itself, the 4th sign from it, the 7th sign from it and the 10th sign from it, in that order. These are the four kendras counted from the sign.
It can show periods when home and property matters are emphasised, usually the dashas of the 4th lord, planets in the 4th house or the D4 Lagna lord. It cannot promise a purchase; that also depends on means and decisions.
The D4 Lagna changes about every 30 minutes, so a birth time accurate to within ten or fifteen minutes is usually enough.
