Some charts seem to promise a great deal, yet the person meets repeated hurdles before results arrive. The Kerala school of astrology, especially the classic Prasna Marga, explains part of this with the idea of badhaka: a house and a planet that obstruct. This guide shows how to find them for any Lagna and how to use the idea sensibly.
The twelve signs fall into three groups by their quality:
| Sign type | Signs | Badhaka house |
|---|---|---|
| Movable (chara) | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn | 11th |
| Fixed (sthira) | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius | 9th |
| Dual (dwiswabhava) | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | 7th |
The house is called the badhaka sthana and its ruler is the badhaka lord or badhakesh (badhakadhipati).
Notice that the badhaka house is a normally good house: the 11th of gains, the 9th of fortune, the 7th of partnership. The traditional explanation is that what we desire most through these houses is also where our expectations meet resistance.
| Lagna | Badhaka house | Sign | Badhaka lord |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 11th | Aquarius | Saturn |
| Taurus | 9th | Capricorn | Saturn |
| Gemini | 7th | Sagittarius | Jupiter |
| Cancer | 11th | Taurus | Venus |
| Leo | 9th | Aries | Mars |
| Virgo | 7th | Pisces | Jupiter |
| Libra | 11th | Leo | Sun |
| Scorpio | 9th | Cancer | Moon |
| Sagittarius | 7th | Gemini | Mercury |
| Capricorn | 11th | Scorpio | Mars |
| Aquarius | 9th | Libra | Venus |
| Pisces | 7th | Virgo | Mercury |
A planet has several roles at once. Two examples show why the badhaka label must never be read alone:
For dual Lagnas the badhaka house is the 7th, which is also a maraka house and a kendra; Jupiter and Mercury there also carry the "kendradhipati" quality (benefics ruling kendras lose some of their natural goodness). These overlapping roles are why the dual Lagnas' 7th-house matters (marriage, partners, business dealings) often need careful, patient handling.
When the badhaka lord is strong or involved with important houses, astrologers look for:
In Prasna, the badhaka lord's position also points to the kind of obstruction behind a question (in the Kerala tradition this includes unfulfilled vows or neglected family worship). Those are matters of tradition and faith; read them as prompts for reflection, not as threats.
How each house lord behaves in each house is summarised in Effects of House Lords in the 12 Houses.
Badhaka is a tool for understanding why some things take longer. It does not predict illness, misfortune or failure, and no single factor overrides the whole chart. Many successful people have a strong badhaka lord; it often describes the very hurdle that shaped their persistence.
The badhaka house is the 11th for movable Lagnas, the 9th for fixed Lagnas and the 7th for dual Lagnas; its lord is the badhaka lord. It points to delays and obstacles, mainly in its own dasa, but it always has to be read together with its other roles. For Taurus and Leo the badhaka lord is also the yogakaraka, which shows how much the full picture matters.
The badhaka house is the house of obstruction. It is the 11th house for movable Lagnas (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), the 9th for fixed Lagnas (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) and the 7th for dual Lagnas (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces).
The lord of the badhaka house. For example Saturn for Aries and Taurus, Venus for Cancer and Aquarius, the Sun for Libra, Mars for Capricorn and Leo, the Moon for Scorpio, Jupiter for Gemini and Virgo, and Mercury for Sagittarius and Pisces.
No. It can bring delays and hurdles in the matters it touches, especially in its dasa, but it still rules its houses. For Taurus Lagna Saturn is both the badhaka lord and the yogakaraka, and it usually gives very good results.
The concept comes from the Kerala tradition of Prasna (horary astrology), especially Prasna Marga, where it helps explain why an undertaking meets obstacles. Many astrologers also apply it to birth charts, with care.
