Hamsa means swan. In Indian tradition the swan stands for discrimination, the ability to separate milk from water, and for a clean and dignified life. Hamsa Yoga carries that picture into the horoscope. It is the yoga of a strong and prominent Jupiter, and it is one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas.
Two conditions must be met together:
A Jupiter who is strong by sign but hidden in the 6th, 8th or 12th does not make the yoga. Nor does a Jupiter in a kendra in an ordinary sign. Strength and prominence have to meet. The four kendras and why they matter are explained in Kendra Trikona and Dusthana Houses.
The kendras of a Lagna are always signs of the same kind as the Lagna. Cancer is a movable sign; Sagittarius and Pisces are dual signs. So Hamsa Yoga is possible only for movable and dual Lagnas.
| Lagna | Jupiter's sign for the yoga | House | Jupiter also rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Cancer (exalted) | 4th | 9th and 12th |
| Cancer | Cancer (exalted) | 1st | 6th and 9th |
| Libra | Cancer (exalted) | 10th | 3rd and 6th |
| Capricorn | Cancer (exalted) | 7th | 3rd and 12th |
| Gemini | Sagittarius / Pisces | 7th / 10th | 7th and 10th |
| Virgo | Sagittarius / Pisces | 4th / 7th | 4th and 7th |
| Sagittarius | Sagittarius / Pisces | 1st / 4th | 1st and 4th |
| Pisces | Pisces / Sagittarius | 1st / 10th | 1st and 10th |
For Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius Lagnas, Jupiter's signs fall in other houses, so the yoga cannot form. These Lagnas can still have a very good Jupiter. Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 5th for Leo is an excellent placement. It simply is not called Hamsa Yoga.
The classical description is of a person with a pleasing face and voice, who is righteous, well spoken of, learned in sacred and worldly subjects, and who enjoys good food and the company of good people. Some texts add that the person lives near water or loves rivers and tanks, which fits the image of the swan.
In present-day terms the yoga shows:
The last column of the table is worth a second look. Jupiter is the same planet in every chart, but the houses he rules change.
Take a Pisces Lagna with Jupiter in Sagittarius.
Hamsa Yoga is formed. Jupiter here is both the Lagna lord and the 10th lord, sitting in the 10th. The person's identity is tied to their work, and the work is of Jupiter's kind: teaching, advising, finance, law or guidance. If the Sun is far from Jupiter and no malefic sits with him, the yoga is of good quality.
Hamsa Yoga forms when Jupiter is in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the Lagna. Only movable and dual Lagnas can have it. It points to learning, good conduct and respect. Its strength depends on Jupiter's degree, freedom from combustion and affliction, his Navamsa position and the houses he rules for that Lagna.
Hamsa Yoga forms when Jupiter is in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer and that sign is the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the Lagna.
Only the movable Lagnas (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) and the dual Lagnas (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces). The fixed Lagnas Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius cannot have it, because none of Jupiter's three signs falls in a kendra for them.
The texts describe a person of good conduct who is learned, respected and fond of teaching or advising others. In practice it shows a clear strength in Jupiter's areas: knowledge, ethics, guidance and goodwill.
Retrogression does not cancel it. Combustion, close conjunction with malefics or a weak Navamsa position reduce the results, so the yoga should be judged for quality and not only for presence.
