Gaja Kesari means "elephant and lion". Classical astrologers gave the name to a combination of Jupiter (Guru) and the Moon (Chandra) because a person with a strong form is said to stand out like a lion among elephants: respected, intelligent and able to overcome rivals.
It is one of the best-known yogas in Vedic astrology, and also one of the most misunderstood, because the simple form appears in many charts.
Count from the sign of the Moon. If Jupiter is in the:
the basic Gaja Kesari condition is met. These four positions are the kendras (angles) from the Moon.
The Moon is in Taurus. Count Taurus as 1: Leo is the 4th, Scorpio the 7th and Aquarius the 10th. If Jupiter is in Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius, the basic yoga is present.
Texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika add conditions. A full Gaja Kesari needs:
| Condition | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon | The basic combination |
| Jupiter joined with or aspected by a benefic (Mercury, Venus, or a strong Moon) | Support makes the yoga productive |
| Jupiter not debilitated (not in Capricorn) | A weak Jupiter cannot deliver its full results |
| Jupiter not combust (not too close to the Sun) | Combustion hides Jupiter's light |
| Jupiter not in an enemy's sign | Jupiter is uncomfortable in the signs of Mercury and Venus |
In short: the basic position, plus support, plus a Jupiter that is not weak.
Jupiter can be in any of 12 signs counted from the Moon, and four of them are kendras. So about one chart in three has the basic form. This is why experienced astrologers never stop at "you have Gaja Kesari yoga". They grade it.
Cancer Lagna. The Moon is in Cancer in the 1st house and Jupiter is in Cancer with it, exalted. Mercury is also in Cancer.
This is a strong Gaja Kesari, likely to show as wisdom, a good reputation and support from teachers, especially in Jupiter's 16-year dasa.
Leo Lagna. The Moon is in Cancer and Jupiter in Capricorn, the 7th from the Moon. The basic condition is met, but Jupiter is debilitated. Unless the debilitation is cancelled, the yoga gives a mild result: good intentions and some recognition, but with effort.
A well-formed Gaja Kesari is traditionally linked with:
It works best alongside other supporting yogas from the Moon, such as those in Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura yoga. For a wider list, see planetary combinations in Vedic astrology.
Gaja Kesari yoga is Jupiter in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) from the Moon. The basic form appears in about one chart in three; the full classical form also needs benefic support and a Jupiter that is not debilitated, combust or in an enemy's sign. Judge it by the dignity of Jupiter and the Moon, their houses from the Lagna and the running dasa.
Gaja Kesari yoga forms when Jupiter is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th sign) counted from the Moon. The full classical rule also asks that Jupiter be supported by a benefic and not be debilitated, combust or in an enemy's sign.
No. Jupiter falls in a kendra from the Moon in about one chart in three. What is rarer is a strong Gaja Kesari, where Jupiter and the Moon are both well placed and dignified.
Classically: intelligence, eloquence, a good reputation, respect from others and lasting prosperity. The results grow with the strength of Jupiter and the Moon and show most in their dasas.
Jupiter in Capricorn (its debilitation sign) does not give a full Gaja Kesari, unless the debilitation is cancelled (Neecha Bhanga). The yoga is then judged with care.
