Among the hundreds of yogas in Vedic astrology, five are singled out as the marks of a mahapurusha, a "great person". Each is formed by one of the five true planets (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn) when it is strong by sign and prominent by house. Together they are called the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas.
A Mahapurusha yoga forms when:
The Sun, Moon, Rahu and Ketu do not form these yogas. (Some astrologers also count kendras from the Moon; the classical and most common method, used here, is from the Lagna.)
| Yoga | Planet | Own / exaltation signs | Classical qualities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ruchaka | Mars | Aries, Scorpio / Capricorn | Courage, strong body, leadership, success in competition, land |
| Bhadra | Mercury | Gemini, Virgo / Virgo | Intelligence, eloquence, learning, skill in trade and writing |
| Hamsa | Jupiter | Sagittarius, Pisces / Cancer | Wisdom, righteousness, respect, a teacher's or adviser's role |
| Malavya | Venus | Taurus, Libra / Pisces | Comforts, beauty, arts, vehicles, a pleasant married life |
| Sasa (Shasha) | Saturn | Capricorn, Aquarius / Libra | Authority over many people, discipline, endurance, organisation |
For a deeper look at the Venus yoga, see Malavya yoga.
The four kendras of any Lagna are always signs of the same kind as the Lagna: movable Lagnas (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) have movable kendras; fixed Lagnas (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) fixed kendras; dual Lagnas (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) dual kendras. That gives a neat table:
| Yoga | Planet's signs | Possible for |
|---|---|---|
| Ruchaka | Aries, Capricorn (movable); Scorpio (fixed) | Movable and fixed Lagnas |
| Bhadra | Gemini, Virgo (dual) | Dual Lagnas only |
| Hamsa | Cancer (movable); Sagittarius, Pisces (dual) | Movable and dual Lagnas |
| Malavya | Libra (movable); Taurus (fixed); Pisces (dual) | Every Lagna |
| Sasa | Libra, Capricorn (movable); Aquarius (fixed) | Movable and fixed Lagnas |
So a Gemini Lagna can never have Ruchaka or Sasa yoga, and a Leo Lagna can never have Bhadra or Hamsa.
Kendras, and why a planet in them is prominent, are explained in Kendra Trikona and Dusthana houses.
The basic rule is simple, but the yoga's quality varies a great deal. Check:
Fairly common. With five planets and several possible signs each, a good share of horoscopes have at least one Mahapurusha yoga, often in a modest form. Having one does not by itself make a person famous; it gives a clear strength in that planet's area of life, which the rest of the chart then develops or limits. Related strength-based yogas, such as Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga, show how even a debilitated planet can rise.
The Pancha Mahapurusha yogas form when Mars (Ruchaka), Mercury (Bhadra), Jupiter (Hamsa), Venus (Malavya) or Saturn (Sasa) is in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra from the Lagna. Malavya is possible for every Lagna, Bhadra only for dual Lagnas. Combustion, affliction and Navamsa strength decide how fully the yoga delivers, and it shows most in that planet's dasa.
It is a group of five yogas formed when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn sits in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the Lagna. They are named Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya and Sasa.
Yes. Venus's signs Taurus (fixed), Libra (movable) and Pisces (dual) cover all three kinds of sign, so for every Lagna one of them falls in a kendra. The other four yogas are possible only for some Lagnas.
Many astrologers say yes. A planet very close to the Sun, or heavily afflicted by malefics, gives a weaker form of the yoga. Mercury in particular is often near the Sun, so Bhadra yoga needs this check.
Its qualities are part of the person's nature, but the yoga shows most clearly in the dasa and bhukti of the planet that forms it.
