Saraswati is the goddess of learning, speech, music and the arts. Saraswati Yoga is the combination in a horoscope that points to these gifts. It is formed by the three planets most closely linked with knowledge and refinement: Jupiter, Venus and Mercury.
So seven houses count: the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th. If any one of the three planets is in the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th or 12th house, the yoga is not formed.
The kendras and trikonas are described in Kendra Trikona and Dusthana Houses.
Each planet brings one side of learning.
| Planet | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Jupiter | Wisdom, grasp of principles, the ability to teach, respect for knowledge |
| Mercury | Intellect, language, logic, calculation, writing, memory for detail |
| Venus | Taste, music, poetry, the fine arts, charm in expression |
The houses are chosen with the same care.
When the three natural benefics of learning all sit in such houses, and the greatest of them is strong, the mind is both capable and cultured.
The person is described as highly intelligent, skilled in prose, poetry, drama and mathematics, learned in sacred texts, widely praised, wealthy and blessed with a good spouse and children.
In present-day terms:
The form of the gift follows the strongest of the three. A dominant Mercury leans to analysis and writing, a dominant Venus to the arts, a dominant Jupiter to teaching and counsel.
1. Mercury and Venus are tied to the Sun. Mercury is never more than about 28┬░ from the Sun and Venus never more than about 47┬░. So these two are always in neighbouring parts of the chart, and one or both may be combust. A combust Mercury or Venus weakens the yoga. The distances are listed in Combustion of Planets in Vedic Astrology.
2. Jupiter's strength is part of the rule. A Jupiter in Capricorn, his debilitation sign, or in an enemy's sign does not complete the yoga even if all three planets are in the right houses.
3. The basic pattern is common. Seven of twelve houses qualify. Many charts meet the house condition. What is uncommon is all three planets in good dignity, free of combustion and of close malefic company. Judge the quality before using the name.
4. Mercury takes the colour of his company. With Jupiter and Venus he is a full benefic. Closely joined with Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu, his contribution changes.
Take a Virgo Lagna with:
| Planet | Sign | House |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury | Virgo | 1st |
| Venus | Libra | 2nd |
| Jupiter | Pisces | 7th |
| Sun | Leo | 12th |
Saraswati Yoga is formed, and in a strong form. Mercury is in his own and exaltation sign in a kendra, so Bhadra Yoga is present as well. Venus is in her own sign in the house of speech. Jupiter in his own sign in the 7th aspects the Lagna and Mercury.
Now the degrees. Say the Sun is at 28┬░ Leo, Mercury at 20┬░ Virgo and Venus at 10┬░ Libra. Mercury is 22┬░ from the Sun and Venus is 42┬░ from the Sun. Both are outside their combustion distances, so both are in good condition.
This small check is worth doing with any chart: confirm the actual degrees before deciding that Mercury and Venus are free of the Sun.
Saraswati Yoga forms when Jupiter, Venus and Mercury all occupy kendras, trikonas or the 2nd house, and Jupiter is in his own, exalted or a friendly sign. It points to learning, fine speech and artistic sense. Because the basic pattern is fairly common, the real test is the strength of the three planets, especially their freedom from combustion.
Saraswati Yoga forms when Jupiter, Venus and Mercury each occupy a kendra, a trikona or the 2nd house, together or in different houses, and Jupiter is in his own, exalted or a friendly sign.
Seven houses count: the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th. All three benefics must be in one or more of these houses.
The basic pattern is not rare, because seven of the twelve houses qualify. A strong form, with all three planets in good dignity and free of combustion, is much less common.
It shows a natural liking for learning, language and the arts. Results in formal education also depend on the 4th and 5th houses, the dashas during the school years and the effort made.
