Bhadra means auspicious, gentle and well-bred. Bhadra Yoga is the yoga of a strong and prominent Mercury, the planet of intellect, speech, calculation and trade. It is one of the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas, and it is the rarest of them by Lagna, because only four Lagnas can have it.
How Bhadra Yoga forms
- Mercury is in his own sign or exaltation sign. His own signs are Gemini and Virgo. Virgo is also his exaltation sign, so only two signs qualify.
- That sign is a kendra from the Lagna: the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house.
Only dual Lagnas can have it
Gemini and Virgo are both dual signs. The kendras of a Lagna are always signs of the same kind as the Lagna, as explained in Movable Fixed and Dual Signs Explained. So only a dual Lagna has Gemini and Virgo in its kendras.
| Lagna | Mercury in Gemini | Mercury in Virgo | Mercury rules |
| Gemini | 1st house | 4th house | 1st and 4th |
| Virgo | 10th house | 1st house | 1st and 10th |
| Sagittarius | 7th house | 10th house | 7th and 10th |
| Pisces | 4th house | 7th house | 4th and 7th |
For the eight movable and fixed Lagnas, Mercury in Gemini or Virgo is still a strong Mercury. It just falls in a house that is not a kendra, so the name Bhadra Yoga does not apply.
What the texts say
The classical picture is of a person with a well-proportioned body and a steady walk, who is intelligent, learned, a good speaker, helpful to relatives and respected by the learned. The emphasis is on a clear mind and refined manners.
In present-day terms:
- A quick and orderly mind. Ease with numbers, language, logic and detail.
- Speech and writing. The person explains things well and is persuasive without force.
- Skill in trade. Mercury rules commerce. Many with this yoga do well in business, accounts, brokerage or consulting.
- Youthfulness and adaptability. An interest in learning that lasts through life.
How the house changes the result
- 1st house. The intellect is the person's main asset. Mercury also has directional strength in the 1st, so Gemini Lagna with Mercury in Gemini, and Virgo Lagna with Mercury in Virgo, are the strongest forms.
- 4th house. Good education, a home full of books and talk, skill in dealing with property and vehicles.
- 7th house. A clever, communicative spouse or business partner, and success in dealing with clients and the public.
- 10th house. A career built on intellect: analysis, writing, teaching, technology, trade or administration.
For Gemini and Virgo, Mercury is the Lagna lord, so the yoga strengthens the whole chart. For Sagittarius and Pisces he rules two kendras, the 7th and another. Here the yoga gives clear professional ability, while matters of partnership depend more on the rest of the chart.
The combustion check
This is the point that matters most for Bhadra Yoga. Mercury is never more than about 28° from the Sun. So in a large share of charts with Mercury in Gemini or Virgo, the Sun is in the same sign.
- Mercury within about 14° of the Sun is counted as combust (12° when retrograde, in some texts). A combust Mercury gives a weaker form of the yoga. Details are in Combustion of Planets in Vedic Astrology.
- Mercury in the same sign as the Sun but outside that distance forms Budha Aditya Yoga as well, which adds to the result.
- Mercury alone in Gemini or Virgo, with the Sun in the next or previous sign, is the cleanest form.
Other things to check
- Degree. Mercury's deepest exaltation is at 15° Virgo. The portion from 16° to 20° Virgo is his moolatrikona, and the rest of Virgo is his own sign. All of these qualify.
- Company. Mercury takes on the nature of the planets he joins. With Jupiter or Venus he is a benefic. Closely joined with Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu he acts differently, and the intellect may be sharp but restless.
- Navamsa. Mercury in Pisces Navamsa, his debilitation sign, reduces the yoga. Mercury at 0° to 3°20' Virgo is in Capricorn Navamsa, and at 26°40' to 30° Virgo he is in Virgo Navamsa, which is the best case.
- Timing. The yoga gives its results mainly in the Mercury dasha and his sub-periods.
A worked example
Take a Sagittarius Lagna with Mercury at 20° Virgo and the Sun at 2° Libra.
- Virgo is Mercury's own and exaltation sign.
- Virgo is the 10th from Sagittarius, a kendra.
- The Sun is in the next sign, 12° away from Mercury. That is inside the 14° distance, so Mercury is combust even though the two are in different signs.
The yoga is formed, but in a reduced form. Now move the Sun to 10° Libra. The distance is 20°, Mercury is free, and the yoga works well. Mercury is the 10th lord in the 10th in his exaltation sign, which points clearly to a career of analysis, communication or trade.
This example shows why Bhadra Yoga should never be judged by sign and house alone.
Summary
Bhadra Yoga forms when Mercury is in Gemini or Virgo in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house, which is possible only for Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces Lagnas. It gives intelligence, good speech and skill in learning and trade. Check Mercury's distance from the Sun, the planets with him and his Navamsa before deciding how much of the yoga will show.
