"Maraka" is one of the most misunderstood words in Vedic astrology. It literally means "one that kills", so people who hear that they are running a maraka dasa often panic. The classical idea is much narrower and much calmer than the word suggests. This guide explains what maraka planets are, how they are found, and how astrologers actually use them.
In the classical system, the 8th house is the main house of longevity (ayur bhava), and the 3rd house, the 8th from the 8th, supports it. A house is "lost" or spent through the house 12th from it. The 12th from the 3rd is the 2nd, and the 12th from the 8th is the 7th. So the 2nd and 7th are the maraka sthanas, the houses through which the longevity houses are spent. Of the two, classical texts treat the 2nd as the stronger.
The same houses are, of course, also the houses of family, wealth and speech (2nd) and marriage and partnership (7th). A maraka planet is not a "bad" planet; it simply has a second role in timing.
Classical texts list them roughly in this order:
| Lagna | 2nd lord | 7th lord |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Venus | Venus |
| Taurus | Mercury | Mars |
| Gemini | Moon | Jupiter |
| Cancer | Sun | Saturn |
| Leo | Mercury | Saturn |
| Virgo | Venus | Jupiter |
| Libra | Mars | Mars |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | Venus |
| Sagittarius | Saturn | Mercury |
| Capricorn | Saturn | Moon |
| Aquarius | Jupiter | Sun |
| Pisces | Mars | Mercury |
For Aries and Libra, one planet rules both maraka houses. For Capricorn, the 2nd lord Saturn is also the Lagna lord, so classical writers note that it protects more than it harms.
A maraka lord can also be a very good planet for the same chart. For Leo Lagna, Mercury rules the 2nd (wealth) as well as the 11th (gains). Its dasa is usually remembered for income, not for danger.
Classical astrologers used marakas together with a longevity estimate. They first judged whether a chart showed short, medium or long life (Alpayu, Madhyayu, Purnayu). Only then did they look at the maraka dasas in that span. Outside it, the same dasas were read for their ordinary results.
Modern practice is simpler and more careful:
Our longer articles on death in Vedic astrology and the types of death described in classical texts explain the wider philosophy; this page covers only the maraka technique.
A responsible reading uses the maraka idea only to suggest care, for example a regular health check-up or safer travel choices, during a sensitive period.
Maraka planets are the lords of the 2nd and 7th houses and the planets connected with them. They mark periods that deserve extra care, especially when combined with other indications, but they are not predictions of death. Read them in the whole chart, weigh the Lagna's strength and Jupiter's protection, and use the knowledge for calm, practical planning.
Maraka planets are the lords of the 2nd and 7th houses, and planets placed in or joined with those houses. Classical texts use them to judge sensitive periods in the dasa sequence.
No. Most people run several maraka dasas and bhuktis in their lifetime without any serious event. In practice these periods more often bring expenses, health check-ups, family responsibilities or changes of place.
The 3rd and 8th houses are houses of longevity. The 2nd and 7th are the 12th from them, the houses of their loss, so their lords are called marakas.
No responsible astrologer predicts a date of death. Astrology can show sensitive periods for extra care; health decisions always belong with a doctor.
