Linga Porutham Basis

Linga Porutham is a traditional Nakshatra-based classification in which the 27 Nakshatras are grouped according to three Linga categories: Pullinga (Male), Stree Linga (Female), and Napumsaka Linga (Neuter).

This classification provides the basic Nakshatra grouping used when considering Linga Porutham in traditional astrology. The following table presents the Nakshatras under each of the three categories.

The Three Linga Categories

According to the classification provided in the reference, the Nakshatras are divided into three groups.

Pullinga Nakshatras (Male) - Ashwini, Krittika, Rohini, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha, Purva Bhadrapada and Uttara Bhadrapada
Stree Linga Nakshatras (Female) - Bharani, Ardra, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta and Revati

How to Identify the Linga of a Nakshatra

To identify the Linga classification of a Nakshatra, locate the Nakshatra in the table above. The column in which it appears indicates whether it is classified as Pullinga, Stree Linga, or Napumsaka Linga according to this traditional reference.

For example, Ashwini is classified as a Pullinga Nakshatra, while Bharani is classified as a Stree Linga Nakshatra. Mrigashirsha is included under the Napumsaka Linga category.

Linga Porutham

In traditional astrology, Linga Porutham uses this Nakshatra classification as one of the factors considered in compatibility analysis. The Linga category of each person's Nakshatra is first identified before applying the relevant rules of the Porutham system.

The classification should therefore be used as a reference for identifying the Linga associated with the respective Janma Nakshatra.
