Beginners learn early that Jupiter and Venus are benefics and that Saturn and Mars are malefics. Then they meet a chart where Saturn's dasha brought the best years of someone's life, and Jupiter's dasha was hard work. The explanation is a second classification, which changes from one Lagna to the next: functional benefics and malefics.
A planet carries the business of its houses wherever it goes. Saturn for a Taurus Lagna rules the 9th and 10th houses, so in its periods it brings fortune and career in Saturn's slow, steady manner. For a Cancer Lagna the same Saturn rules the 7th and 8th and has a very different job.
The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives a short set of principles:
The house groups behind these rules are explained in Kendra Trikona and Dusthana Houses.
Parashara then applies the rules to each Lagna. This is his list.
| Lagna | Auspicious | Inauspicious | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Sun, Jupiter | Saturn, Mercury, Venus | Mars is the Lagna lord and helpful although it also rules the 8th |
| Taurus | Saturn, Sun | Jupiter, Venus, Moon | Saturn is the yogakaraka |
| Gemini | Venus | Mars, Jupiter, Sun | Venus is the only planet named as auspicious |
| Cancer | Mars, Jupiter, Moon | Venus, Mercury | Mars is the yogakaraka |
| Leo | Mars, Jupiter, Sun | Mercury, Venus, Saturn | Mars is the yogakaraka |
| Virgo | Mercury, Venus | Mars, Jupiter, Moon | Mercury with Venus forms a yoga |
| Libra | Saturn, Mercury | Jupiter, Sun, Mars | Saturn is the yogakaraka; Moon with Mercury forms a Raja yoga |
| Scorpio | Jupiter, Moon | Venus, Mercury, Saturn | Sun with the Moon forms a Raja yoga |
| Sagittarius | Mars, Sun | Venus | Sun with Mercury forms a yoga |
| Capricorn | Venus, Mercury | Mars, Jupiter, Moon | Venus is the yogakaraka |
| Aquarius | Venus, Saturn | Jupiter, Moon, Mars | Venus is the yogakaraka |
| Pisces | Mars, Moon | Saturn, Venus, Sun, Mercury | Mars with Jupiter forms a yoga |
Planets not named for a Lagna are treated as neutral or mixed: they give according to their placement and company.
Taurus Lagna. Saturn rules the 9th and 10th: a trikona and a kendra, so it is the best planet. The Sun rules the 4th, a kendra; as a natural malefic it loses its harshness there and is listed as auspicious. Jupiter rules the 8th and the 11th, both on the difficult list, so it is inauspicious here even though it is the greatest natural benefic. The Moon rules the 3rd. Venus rules the Lagna but also the 6th, and Parashara places it among the inauspicious planets; most astrologers still give the Lagna lord its due importance for health and vitality.
Leo Lagna. Mars rules the 4th and 9th and is the yogakaraka. Jupiter rules the 5th, a trikona, and the 8th; the trikona wins. Mercury rules the 2nd and 11th, Venus the 3rd and 10th, Saturn the 6th and 7th: each is tied to a house from the 3rd, 6th, 11th group.
Sagittarius Lagna. Only Venus is named as inauspicious: it rules the 6th and the 11th, both from the difficult group.
This table is the classical starting point, not the last word. You will find differences between books, mainly on three points:
When two sources disagree about a planet, it is usually one of these mixed cases. Treat such a planet as mixed: helpful in some matters, demanding in others.
The word sounds harsh, but a functional malefic simply rules houses of effort, competition, debt, change or desire: the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 11th. Those houses are part of every life, and they are where much real achievement happens. The 6th gives the capacity to work and compete; the 11th gives gains; the 3rd gives courage and skill. A period of a functional malefic asks for discipline and care in that area. It is not a forecast of misfortune.
Natural benefics and malefics describe how a planet behaves; functional benefics and malefics describe what it delivers for your Lagna. Trikona lords help, lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th demand effort, kendra lordship neutralises, and a planet ruling both a kendra and a trikona is the yogakaraka. Use Parashara's table as the starting point, check each planet's strength and placement, and treat mixed planets as mixed.
A functional benefic is a planet that becomes helpful for a particular Lagna because of the houses it rules, mainly the 1st, 5th and 9th. It is different from a natural benefic such as Jupiter or Venus, which is gentle by nature for everyone.
Yes. For Taurus and Libra Lagna, for example, Jupiter rules difficult houses and Parashara lists it among the inauspicious planets for those Lagnas. It keeps its good nature, but the matters it brings are those of the houses it rules.
No. It shows an area that needs care or effort. Its real results depend on its strength, its house, its company and the dasha running. A well-placed functional malefic often gives growth through hard work.
Rahu and Ketu rule no signs, so they have no fixed role. They give the results of the house they occupy and of the planets they are joined with or whose sign they are in.
