Lakshmi is the goddess of prosperity, grace and good fortune. The yoga named after her, Lakshmi Yoga, is among the best known wealth and fortune combinations in Vedic astrology. Its logic is simple: the person is strong, and the house of fortune is strong and well placed.
The definition most often quoted is this:
The classical texts do not word it in exactly the same way. A common variant asks for the 9th lord and Venus both to be in own or exalted signs in kendras or trikonas. Venus is the natural significator of Lakshmi, of comfort and of wealth, so this version adds her to the picture. If a chart meets the first definition and also has a strong Venus, both schools agree.
The house groups are explained in Kendra Trikona and Dusthana Houses.
A planet's own and exaltation signs are fixed, so for each Lagna only certain placements of the 9th lord can form the yoga. The dignities are listed in Exaltation, Moolatrikona, Own Sign and Debilitation.
| Lagna | 9th lord | Placements that qualify |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Jupiter | Sagittarius (9th), Cancer (4th, exalted) |
| Taurus | Saturn | Capricorn (9th), Aquarius (10th) |
| Gemini | Saturn | Aquarius (9th), Libra (5th, exalted) |
| Cancer | Jupiter | Pisces (9th), Cancer (1st, exalted) |
| Leo | Mars | Aries (9th), Scorpio (4th) |
| Virgo | Venus | Taurus (9th), Pisces (7th, exalted) |
| Libra | Mercury | Gemini (9th) |
| Scorpio | Moon | Cancer (9th), Taurus (7th, exalted) |
| Sagittarius | Sun | Leo (9th), Aries (5th, exalted) |
| Capricorn | Mercury | Virgo (9th, own and exalted) |
| Aquarius | Venus | Libra (9th), Taurus (4th) |
| Pisces | Mars | Scorpio (9th) |
Some own or exalted signs are missing from the table because they fall in other houses. For Aries Lagna, Jupiter in Pisces is in his own sign but in the 12th house, so it does not count.
For every Lagna, the 9th lord in the 9th house itself always qualifies. That placement is the simplest form of the yoga.
The texts say only "strong". In practice a Lagna lord is taken as strong when he is:
A Lagna lord who is debilitated, combust or in the 8th house leaves the yoga incomplete, however good the 9th lord may be.
The person is described as wealthy, noble, learned, of high integrity, good-looking and well known, and as someone who enjoys the comforts of life. The texts speak of a ruler; today we would say a person of standing.
In practical terms:
This is a tendency and a support, not a promise of riches. The amount depends on the whole chart. Other wealth indicators are described in Planetary Combinations for Wealth in Vedic Astrology.
Take a Sagittarius Lagna.
Suppose the Sun is in Aries and Jupiter is in Sagittarius.
Lakshmi Yoga is formed. Notice also that Jupiter in the Lagna aspects the 5th house and the 9th house, so he looks at both the Sun and the Sun's own sign. The 1st, 5th and 9th houses are all strong and connected. Such a chart shows a person whose own ability, intelligence and fortune work together.
Now change one thing: put Jupiter in Capricorn, his debilitation sign, in the 2nd house. The 9th lord is still exalted in a trikona, but the Lagna lord is weak. The fortune is still there, yet the person may not use it fully. This is why the definition names the Lagna lord first.
Lakshmi Yoga forms when the Lagna lord is strong and the 9th lord is in his own or exalted sign in a kendra or trikona. Some texts also require a strong Venus. It shows fortune standing behind the person's efforts, a good name and a comfortable life. The strength of the Lagna lord decides how well that fortune is used, and the dashas decide when.
The most quoted rule is that the lord of the Lagna is strong and the lord of the 9th house is in his own or exaltation sign in a kendra or a trikona. Some texts add or substitute a strong Venus.
No single yoga guarantees anything. Lakshmi Yoga shows that fortune supports the person's efforts. How much it gives depends on the strength of the planets, the rest of the chart and the dashas that run during the working years.
The 9th house and its lord. The 9th is the house of fortune, and in Indian tradition it is called the Lakshmi sthana among the trikonas.
Mainly in the dashas and sub-periods of the 9th lord and the Lagna lord, and of Venus if she takes part in the yoga.
