Akhanda means unbroken, and samrajya means empire. Akhanda Samrajya Yoga is described in the classical yoga collections as a combination for wide and lasting dominion. It has an impressive name and is often called rare. This article sets out the rule, shows which Lagnas can have it and explains how to judge it sensibly.
The definition most widely quoted has two parts.
The 2nd and 11th are the houses of wealth and gains. The 5th and 9th are the trikonas, the houses of merit and fortune. So the yoga ties Jupiter, the great benefic, to the houses of prosperity, and then asks for one of the prosperity lords to stand in strength from the Moon.
The first condition settles which charts can have the yoga at all. Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces. For each Lagna those two signs fall in particular houses.
| Lagna | Houses ruled by Jupiter | Qualifies? |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 9th and 12th | No |
| Taurus | 8th and 11th | Yes |
| Gemini | 7th and 10th | No |
| Cancer | 6th and 9th | No |
| Leo | 5th and 8th | Yes |
| Virgo | 4th and 7th | No |
| Libra | 3rd and 6th | No |
| Scorpio | 2nd and 5th | Yes |
| Sagittarius | 1st and 4th | No |
| Capricorn | 3rd and 12th | No |
| Aquarius | 2nd and 11th | Yes |
| Pisces | 1st and 10th | No |
Jupiter rules the 2nd, 5th or 11th only for Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. These are the four fixed signs, described in Movable Fixed and Dual Signs Explained. The link with fixed signs suits the name: fixed signs stand for what is stable and lasting, and the yoga speaks of an unbroken position.
For the second condition, find the lords of the 2nd, 9th and 11th for the Lagna and see whether any one of them is in a kendra from the Moon.
| Lagna | 2nd lord | 9th lord | 11th lord |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taurus | Mercury | Saturn | Jupiter |
| Leo | Mercury | Mars | Mercury |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | Moon | Mercury |
| Aquarius | Jupiter | Venus | Jupiter |
A note on Scorpio: the Moon is herself the 9th lord, and she is always in the 1st from herself. Read strictly, that would give every Scorpio Lagna the yoga, which cannot be the intention. Careful astrologers look for Jupiter or Mercury in a kendra from the Moon in such a chart.
When the planet in a kendra from the Moon is Jupiter, as it can be for Taurus, Scorpio and Aquarius, the chart also has Gaja Kesari Yoga. The two yogas then support each other.
The result given is a wide, undivided dominion and a long and prosperous life. In present-day terms:
The scale depends on the chart. For most people who have it, the yoga shows as stability and steady growth in their own field. It is not a forecast of political power.
Take an Aquarius Lagna.
Suppose the Moon is in Gemini (5th house) and Jupiter is in Sagittarius (11th house).
Akhanda Samrajya Yoga is formed. Jupiter is in his own sign in the house of gains, and the Moon and Jupiter face each other, which gives Gaja Kesari Yoga too. Jupiter also aspects the 5th house, where the Moon sits. This is a strong form. It describes steady gains, a wide circle of helpful contacts and good sense in using resources.
Now suppose Jupiter were in Capricorn, his debilitation sign, in the 12th house, and it was Venus in Virgo who stood in a kendra from the Moon. Virgo is the 4th from Gemini, so the letter of the rule is still met. But Jupiter is weak and Venus is in her debilitation sign. The yoga is present in name and gives little. This is the difference between finding a yoga and weighing it.
Akhanda Samrajya Yoga needs Jupiter to rule the 2nd, 5th or 11th house, which limits it to Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius Lagnas, and it needs one of the 2nd, 9th or 11th lords in a kendra from the Moon. It points to stable and lasting prosperity or standing. Its real strength rests on the condition of Jupiter and the Moon, so weigh those two before giving the yoga much importance.
By the commonly quoted rule, Jupiter must be the lord of the 2nd, 5th or 11th house, and one of the lords of the 2nd, 9th and 11th houses must be in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) from the Moon.
Only the four fixed Lagnas: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. For these Lagnas Jupiter rules the 2nd, 5th or 11th house. For the other eight Lagnas he does not.
Akhanda means unbroken and samrajya means empire or dominion. The name suggests lasting authority or prosperity, as opposed to a short rise followed by a fall.
The basic conditions are met fairly often among fixed Lagna charts. A strong form, with a well placed Jupiter and Moon and good dignity for the lords involved, is uncommon.
