Adhi yoga is one of the classical Chandra (Moon) yogas, and one of the more powerful ones. It forms when the gentle planets Mercury, Jupiter and Venus gather in the houses opposite the Moon. Texts such as Brihat Jataka, Saravali and Phaladeepika describe it as a yoga of leadership, comfort and steady success.
Count from the sign of the Moon as 1. Look at the:
If the natural benefics Mercury, Jupiter and Venus occupy these signs (between them, in any arrangement), the chart has Adhi yoga.
The Moon is in Aries. Counting Aries as 1:
If Mercury is in Virgo, Venus in Libra and Jupiter in Scorpio, all three benefics are in the 6th-7th-8th group: a full Adhi yoga. (Mercury in Virgo is exalted and Venus in Libra is in its own sign, so this is a strong one.)
Saravali and Phaladeepika grade the yoga by how many benefics take part:
| Benefics in the 6th, 7th, 8th from the Moon | Classical result |
|---|---|
| All three (Mercury, Jupiter, Venus) | Highest: rule, authority, leadership |
| Two of them | Good: a position like a minister or senior advisor |
| One of them | Moderate: a position like a commander or manager |
In modern words: the more benefics take part, and the stronger they are, the more the person rises to a position of trust and responsibility.
These three signs face the Moon from across the zodiac. Benefics there look back at the Moon (the 7th sign fully aspects it) and protect it. The 6th from the Moon also governs enemies and obstacles, and the 8th governs sudden events; benefics in them are said to overcome rivals and soften shocks. That is why Adhi yoga is linked with victory over enemies and a long, comfortable life.
The Moon is in Capricorn. The 6th is Gemini, the 7th Cancer and the 8th Leo. Jupiter is in Cancer (exalted) and Mercury in Gemini (own sign). Venus is elsewhere.
The same pattern counted from the Lagna (benefics in the 6th, 7th and 8th houses) is called Lagna Adhi yoga. It is read in a similar way but is usually treated as a little milder than the Moon version. Benefics in the 6th and 8th houses from the Lagna also need care: they help overcome difficulties, but those houses are not easy places.
| Yoga | Condition |
|---|---|
| Sunapha | A planet in the 2nd from the Moon |
| Anapha | A planet in the 12th from the Moon |
| Durudhura | Planets on both sides of the Moon |
| Kemadruma | No planet on either side (often cancelled) |
| Adhi | Benefics in the 6th, 7th, 8th from the Moon |
The first three are explained in Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura yoga. A chart with Adhi yoga often also escapes Kemadruma, because a planet in the 7th from the Moon is in a kendra from it, one of the classical cancellations listed in Kemadruma yoga meaning and cancellation.
Adhi yoga forms when Mercury, Jupiter and Venus occupy the 6th, 7th and 8th signs from the Moon. All three give the highest grade, two a good grade and one a moderate grade. Judge it by the benefics' dignity, combustion, malefic company and the dasa. The classical results are leadership, protection from rivals and a comfortable, respected life.
Adhi yoga forms when the natural benefics Mercury, Jupiter and Venus occupy the 6th, 7th and 8th signs counted from the Moon. The classical results are leadership, a comfortable life and freedom from enemies.
The full yoga needs all three. Classical texts grade it: all three benefics there give the best result, two give a good result and one gives a smaller one.
It is the same pattern counted from the Lagna instead of the Moon: benefics in the 6th, 7th and 8th houses. Some texts treat it as a separate, slightly weaker yoga.
It counts, but gives less. The benefics should be free from combustion, debilitation and malefic association for the yoga to give clear results.
