The silent saint of Kasavanampatti - Nirvana Swamigal

The Silent Saint of Kasavanampatti – A Beacon of Divine Grace

In the quiet village of Kasavanampatti in Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu, lived a mystical sage revered by all as the "Mouna Saamigal" – the Silent Saint. Renowned for his vow of silence and deep spiritual state, he attained Jeeva Samadhi (liberation while alive) nearly 37 years ago, and a shrine now stands in his honor at the very spot of his samadhi.

From birth to liberation, it is said that this saint never wore clothes, living as a Digambara (sky-clad), a state symbolizing utter renunciation. Despite his silence, devotees from all parts of India and even abroad came to receive his blessings and grace. Many famous saints of Tamil Nadu held him in the highest regard. Yogi Ramsuratkumar of Tiruvannamalai once said, "If I am a wave, the saint of Kasavanampatti is an ocean." Others like Swami Gnananandagiri of Thirukkovilur and Kodi Swamigal described him as a radiant light and a beacon among saints.

His renunciation was unparalleled. He lived exactly as he was born, untouched by worldly attachments or shame. The people of Kasavanampatti, and the true devotees, protected and revered him like a child of their own, never once treating his nakedness with scorn. Instead, they saw in him a divine form, an embodiment of grace.

About 85 years ago, this saint is believed to have first appeared east of the village, near a forest called Avarampatti. He was found eating green leaves and appeared like a boy aged around 10 to 12, with a soft face, lean frame, long arms, reddish eyes, and clear wisdom, wandering like a madman yet filled with spiritual brilliance.

Farmers and cattle herders in the area gradually befriended him with reverence, offering him food and learning from his mysterious ways. Eventually, he was brought to the village, bathed, and dressed. But he would repeatedly tear the clothes off, prompting the villagers to let him remain as he chose – in his natural form. Over time, they began to recognize him not as a madman but as a divine incarnation.

He would often wander to other villages like Vellampatti and Konaur, but the villagers would always bring him back with love. He suffered abuse at the hands of ignorant people elsewhere but never responded with anger – only with a smile.

During the day, he would roam around temples like the Sivashakti, Mala Kovil, and Poongani Amman temple. He often sat at the Muthalamman temple, even sleeping there at night. The very cot he used still remains preserved. He would visit every house in the village like a playful child. No discrimination – rich or poor, all offered him simple food which he accepted lovingly, while he refused even luxurious offerings from wealthy devotees.

He would sometimes mumble in his own language while drawing mysterious patterns on the ground with twigs. These scribbles were believed to influence the karma or destiny of those who came to him. Sometimes he would hand those twigs to specific devotees, believed to carry spiritual significance.

Despite appearing like a poor farmer, his body radiated divine energy. Devotees would smear his body with holy ash, sandal paste, and vermillion. He never objected, gazing into the sky, lost in divine consciousness. Though mostly silent, he would utter words like "go" or "leave" in the native language of the visiting devotee, astonishing many.

Though occasionally he appeared angry, it was only to correct or bless devotees in ways they would understand only later. His blessings came in unconventional forms – a slap, a kick, or a scolding – all received with gratitude by those who understood his divine intention.

Remarkably, he was never afflicted by any major illness, nor did he ever take medicine. Even when bitten by a rabid dog once, he refused treatment and healed naturally. Unlike other saints who bore physical suffering for their disciples' karma, he remained untouched, like fire that burns away all impurities.

He was seen as a direct embodiment of the Supreme. For many, he was a source of strength, comfort, and divine light. On October 22, 1982, during the auspicious Moola star in the Tamil month of Aippasi, this great soul merged with the Supreme.

The day after his Mahasamadhi, his body continued to emit divine light. On October 23, 1982, during the final rites, a miraculous rain showered upon the village while celestial clouds gathered above. It was as if the heavens had descended to pay tribute.

As his body was ceremoniously placed in the cave shrine built for him, sacred rituals were performed. His body was bathed with holy water, sandalwood paste, camphor, rose water, and sacred ash.
