Experienced astrologers often say that a planet "matures" at a certain age. Jupiter matures at 16, Saturn at 36, Rahu at 42 and so on. The idea is simple: each planet's qualities take a certain number of years to settle in a person, and after that age the planet gives its results more steadily.
This is a traditional observation handed down among practising astrologers. It is not a calculation like a dasha, and you will not find it set out as a formula in the main classical texts. It is best used as a supporting aid, and that is how this guide presents it.
| Planet | Maturity age | What tends to settle |
|---|---|---|
| Jupiter | 16 | Learning, values, sense of right and wrong |
| Sun | 22 | Identity, confidence, direction |
| Moon | 24 | Emotions, relationships with family, peace of mind |
| Venus | 25 | Relationships, taste, readiness for marriage |
| Mars | 28 | Drive, courage, control over anger and haste |
| Mercury | 32 | Judgment, skill in trade and communication |
| Saturn | 36 | Career stability, responsibility, patience |
| Rahu | 42 | Worldly ambitions find a settled form |
| Ketu | 48 | Detachment, spiritual interest, letting go |
The age is usually taken as the completed year, so "Saturn at 36" refers to the time around the 36th birthday and the year that follows.
The order follows the ordinary course of life.
What each planet stands for is listed in Natural Karakas of the Planets and Houses.
1. For the planet's own significations. After Venus matures, matters of Venus, such as relationships and comforts, tend to be handled more wisely. After Mars matures, impulsive decisions become fewer.
2. For the houses the planet rules and occupies. If Saturn rules your 10th house, career stability is often noticed around 36. If Mars rules your 4th, matters of property often settle around 28.
3. For yogas. A yoga formed by a planet is said to show fully only after that planet matures. A Mahapurusha yoga formed by Saturn may look ordinary in the twenties and prove itself after 36. The five such yogas are described in Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga Explained.
4. For difficult placements. The same rule works in a helpful way for weak or afflicted planets. The troubles shown by a poorly placed Mars often ease after 28, and those of a difficult Rahu after 42, because the person has learned how to handle that energy.
The dasha remains the main timing tool. The method is in Vimshottari Dasha Calculation Explained, and the way a dasha switches on a combination is described in How Dasha Activates Planetary Combinations.
Put the two together like this:
| Situation | Reading |
|---|---|
| Planet has matured and its dasha or bhukti is running | Results are most complete |
| Dasha is running but the planet has not matured | Results come, but partly, or with inexperience |
| Planet has matured but no dasha or bhukti of it is running | A quiet, general improvement in its matters |
| Neither | Its matters stay in the background |
A person who runs Saturn dasa from age 10 to 29 will meet Saturn's lessons early and may find those years demanding. A person who runs Saturn dasa from 38 to 57 meets the same planet after it has matured, and usually handles it far better.
Capricorn Lagna, Saturn in Libra. Saturn is the Lagna lord, exalted in the 10th house. This is a strong placement for career. In the twenties this person may work long hours for modest reward and watch others move ahead faster. Around 36 the picture often changes: the experience gathered becomes authority, and the position becomes secure. The chart did not change. Saturn matured.
Virgo Lagna, Mercury in Gemini. Mercury is the Lagna lord in its own sign in the 10th house. Talent with words or numbers is visible from youth, since Mercury is quick. Yet the tradition says the full professional standing comes around 32, when skill is joined by judgment.
Each planet is said to mature at a set age: Jupiter 16, Sun 22, Moon 24, Venus 25, Mars 28, Mercury 32, Saturn 36, Rahu 42 and Ketu 48. After that age its significations, its houses and its yogas tend to give steadier results, and its difficulties tend to ease. It is a traditional rule of thumb. Use it together with the dasha, never in place of it.
By tradition: Jupiter 16, Sun 22, Moon 24, Venus 25, Mars 28, Mercury 32, Saturn 36, Rahu 42 and Ketu 48.
It is the age by which the planet's qualities are said to settle in a person. After that age the planet tends to give its results in a steadier and more complete way.
No. A strong Saturn can give results earlier through its dasha. The tradition says only that Saturn's themes, such as career stability and responsibility, tend to settle around 36.
No. The dasha and bhukti remain the main timing tool. Maturity ages are a supporting observation used alongside them.
