A kahala was a large drum or horn sounded at the head of an army. The yoga named after it describes the kind of person who goes in front: energetic, bold and placed in charge of others. Kahala Yoga is one of the classical yogas for courage and command, and it is built from three familiar pieces of the chart: the 4th house, the Lagna lord and a planet of fortune.
The classical texts give more than one rule. These are the ones in common use.
"Kendras from each other" means the two planets are in the same sign, or four, seven or ten signs apart.
The lord of the 4th house is in its own or exalted sign and is joined by the lord of the 10th house.
This is the version given by B.V. Raman in his well known collection of three hundred yogas.
The two main rules are close in spirit. Jupiter is the natural significator of fortune, and the 9th lord is the lord of fortune for the particular chart. Either way, the 4th lord is being linked with luck and guidance, and the Lagna lord supplies the strength to use it.
For a reminder of what kendras are, see Kendra Trikona and Dusthana Houses.
When the base and the fortune are joined by a kendra relationship, and the person is strong, the result is someone who can hold ground and lead from it.
The texts simply say "strong". In practice astrologers look for a Lagna lord that is:
Not every point is needed. An exalted Lagna lord in a kendra is clearly strong. A debilitated Lagna lord in the 8th clearly is not. The table of dignities is in Exaltation, Moolatrikona, Own Sign and Debilitation.
Take an Aries Lagna.
Now suppose:
| Planet | Sign | House |
|---|---|---|
| Moon | Taurus | 2nd |
| Jupiter | Leo | 5th |
| Mars | Capricorn | 10th |
Kahala Yoga is formed. For an Aries Lagna the two rules agree, because Jupiter is himself the 9th lord. The Moon is also exalted in Taurus, which makes the yoga stronger still. And the Moon with Jupiter in a kendra from her forms Gaja Kesari Yoga at the same time.
Parashara says the person will be energetic, adventurous and attractive, will command a complete army and will rule over a few villages. Other texts add that the person is daring and firm-minded.
In present-day terms:
Kahala Yoga belongs to the wider family of yogas that link a kendra with fortune. The best known member of that family is the yoga formed when a kendra lord and a trikona lord join, and the single planet that rules both is the yogakaraka for the Lagna. Kahala is a specific case with its own flavour: because the 4th house and the Lagna lord are involved, the result is less about fame and more about courage, a personal following and a firm base.
Kahala Yoga forms when the 4th lord and Jupiter, or the 4th and 9th lords, are in kendras from each other and the Lagna lord is strong. Parashara also allows a 4th lord in own or exalted sign joined by the 10th lord. It points to an energetic, bold person with a secure base who is given charge of others. The strength of the Lagna lord decides how much of this is seen, and the dashas of the planets involved decide when.
Parashara's rule is that the lord of the 4th house and Jupiter are in kendras from each other while the Lagna lord is strong. Another classical rule uses the lords of the 4th and 9th houses in mutual kendras, again with a strong Lagna lord.
It is said to give energy, courage, a bold and determined nature and a position of command over a team, a department or a locality.
Kahala is a large drum or horn that was sounded before an army. The name suggests a person whose presence is noticed and who leads from the front.
Not fully. A strong Lagna lord is part of the definition. With a weak Lagna lord the courage may be present but the position and results are reduced.
