The twelve signs of the zodiac are sorted in several ways. One of the oldest and most useful is by element: fire, earth, air and water. In Sanskrit an element is a tattva, and the four are agni (fire), prithvi (earth), vayu (air) and jala (water). The element of a sign tells you what that sign is made of, and so how planets placed in it tend to behave.
The pattern repeats from Aries: fire, earth, air, water, and round again.
| Element | Signs | Key idea |
|---|---|---|
| Fire (agni) | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Energy, will, purpose |
| Earth (prithvi) | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Substance, work, results |
| Air (vayu) | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | Ideas, exchange, relationships |
| Water (jala) | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | Feeling, depth, intuition |
Two things follow from the pattern:
Fire and air signs are the odd signs, traditionally called masculine and outgoing. Earth and water signs are the even signs, called feminine and receptive.
Fire gives heat, light and direction. Fire signs act from conviction. They are confident, enthusiastic and quick to lead, and they want life to mean something. Too much fire can show as impatience or pride. Aries starts, Leo commands and Sagittarius teaches.
Earth gives form and stability. Earth signs want something real to show for their effort. They are practical, patient and good with money, materials and method. Too much earth can show as caution or attachment to things. Taurus gathers and enjoys, Virgo analyses and improves, Capricorn organises and builds.
Air moves and connects. Air signs live through thought, speech and contact with others. They are sociable, curious and fair-minded, and they need variety. Too much air can show as restlessness or living in the head. Gemini communicates, Libra balances and Aquarius works with groups and ideas.
Water flows and takes the shape of what holds it. Water signs feel first and think afterwards. They are caring, imaginative and intuitive, with a strong memory for emotion. Too much water can show as moodiness or being easily hurt. Cancer nurtures, Scorpio probes and transforms, Pisces dissolves boundaries and lets go.
None of the four is better than the others. A chart needs purpose, means, connection and feeling.
Indian thought names four aims of human life, and each element carries one of them.
| Element | Aim | Meaning | Houses in the same group |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire | Dharma | Purpose, right conduct | 1, 5, 9 |
| Earth | Artha | Resources, livelihood | 2, 6, 10 |
| Air | Kama | Desires, relationships | 3, 7, 11 |
| Water | Moksha | Release, inner peace | 4, 8, 12 |
The houses follow the same rhythm as the signs. The 1st, 5th and 9th are the dharma houses, the 2nd, 6th and 10th the artha houses, and so on. This is why a cluster of planets in earth signs, or in the artha houses, points to a life much concerned with work and resources.
The Lagna. The element of the rising sign shows the basic approach to life and something of the physical nature: fire is warm and active, earth sturdy and steady, air light and quick, water soft and sensitive.
The Moon. The Moon's element shows how the mind reacts: with action (fire), with practical steps (earth), by talking it through (air) or by feeling it deeply (water).
The balance of planets. Count the planets in each element.
A planet in a sign. A planet is comfortable in an element like its own nature. Parashara gives the planets elements too: Mars is fire, Mercury is earth, Saturn is air, Venus is water and Jupiter is ether (space). The Sun is fiery and the Moon watery.
Treat all of this as a first impression. The lord of the sign, the aspects on it and the house it falls in decide the detail.
Parashara assigns a direction to each group: fire signs to the east, earth signs to the south, air signs to the west and water signs to the north. This is used in question charts, for example to judge the direction of travel or of a lost article.
Some divisional charts start their count from a different sign for each element. In the Navamsa (D9), the nine parts of a fire sign are counted from Aries, of an earth sign from Capricorn, of an air sign from Libra and of a water sign from Cancer, as shown in Nakshatra Padas and Navamsa Explained. The Bhamsa (D27) also starts by element: from Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn for fire, earth, air and water signs.
The three places where a water sign ends and a fire sign begins (Pisces to Aries, Cancer to Leo, Scorpio to Sagittarius) are the sensitive junctions called Gandanta. A sign boundary and a nakshatra boundary fall together there.
When two charts are compared, the elements of the two Moons or Lagnas give a quick sense of how the two people will get along day to day. Fire and air feed each other; earth and water support each other. This is only a first hint. Proper matching uses the ten poruthams or the kuta system and the full charts.
The grouping of signs by element is the same in both systems. But Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which at present is about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac used in the West. Many people therefore find their Sun, Moon or rising sign one sign earlier in the Vedic chart, which changes the element. Read the elements from the chart you are actually using.
Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are fire; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are earth; Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are air; Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are water. The signs of one element are in trine to one another and share one of the four aims of life: dharma, artha, kama or moksha. Look at the element of the Lagna and the Moon for temperament and at the balance of all the planets for the make-up of the chart, and remember that the same four groups decide directions, the starting signs of the Navamsa and the D27, and the Gandanta junctions.
Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
The grouping of signs is the same. But Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, so your Lagna, Moon and Sun may fall in a different sign, and so a different element, from your Western chart.
Both are read. The element of the Lagna shows the outward approach and the body's nature, and the element of the Moon shows the habit of the mind and feelings.
Each element is linked with one aim of life: fire signs with dharma (purpose), earth signs with artha (resources), air signs with kama (desires and relationships) and water signs with moksha (release).
