Yoni porutham is one of the ten poruthams (compatibility checks) used in South Indian marriage matching. Every nakshatra is linked with an animal, and the relationship between the two animals of the bride's and groom's stars is read as a sign of physical and temperamental harmony.
This page is a quick lookup chart. For the meaning of each yoni, see our full guide to yoni in Vedic astrology.

In each pair, one star is the male and the other the female of the same animal. The Mongoose stands alone because its partner star, Abhijit, is left out of the 27-star system used for matching.
Classical texts list seven pairs of natural enemies. When the bride's and groom's yonis form one of these pairs, yoni porutham is taken as not matching:
| Enemy pair | Stars involved |
|---|---|
| Horse and Buffalo | Ashwini, Shatabhisha with Hasta, Swati |
| Elephant and Lion | Bharani, Revati with Dhanishta, Purva Bhadrapada |
| Sheep and Monkey | Krittika, Pushya with Purvashada, Shravana |
| Serpent and Mongoose | Rohini, Mrigashira with Uttarashada |
| Dog and Deer | Ardra, Moola with Anuradha, Jyeshtha |
| Cat and Rat | Punarvasu, Ashlesha with Magha, Purva Phalguni |
| Cow and Tiger | Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Bhadrapada with Chitra, Vishakha |
The traditional Tamil matching tables that Sithars Astrology follows go a little further. They also mark a pair as unfriendly when one animal naturally hunts or chases the other, for example the Tiger or Lion with the grazing animals (Cow, Deer, Buffalo), the Cat with the Dog, and the Rat or Sheep with the Serpent. So you may see a few more "not matching" results in a Tamil porutham table than in a North Indian kuta list.
Example. A bride in Rohini (Serpent) and a groom in Uttarashada (Mongoose): Serpent and Mongoose are enemies, so yoni does not match. A bride in Hasta (Buffalo) and a groom in Swati (Buffalo): same yoni, an excellent match.
Yoni is traditionally read for physical compatibility, instinct and the ease of daily life together. It does not decide the success of a marriage on its own. Our articles on the best yoni for marriage and the difficult yoni combinations look at the pairs in more detail, and the basis of yoni porutham explains where the animal symbolism comes from.
A careful astrologer:
Keep the two tables above handy: the star gives the animal, and the seven enemy pairs tell you when yoni fails. Everything else is acceptable, and the same animal is the best of all. Then let the full comparison of both horoscopes guide the final decision.
Fourteen. Thirteen animals are shared by two nakshatras each, one star as the male and one as the female. The Mongoose belongs to Uttarashada alone in the 27-star system.
The seven classical enemy pairs are Horse and Buffalo, Elephant and Lion, Sheep and Monkey, Serpent and Mongoose, Dog and Deer, Cat and Rat, and Cow and Tiger.
Yes. The same animal, especially one partner in the male star and the other in the female star, is taken as the best yoni match.
No. Yoni is one of ten poruthams. A good astrologer weighs it with Rasi, Rajju, the dosha check and the two full charts before giving advice.
