Basis of Yoni Porutham

Yoni Porutham is a traditional Nakshatra-based compatibility classification used in Vedic astrology. The term Yoni is associated with an animal classification, and the Nakshatras are grouped into different categories within the traditional system.

The following classification associates the Nakshatras with eight directional divisions. Each direction is further associated with a traditional name and a corresponding group of Nakshatras.

Eight Directional Groups

The classification is arranged across the eight traditional directions. Each direction is accompanied by a corresponding name in the supplied reference:

East (Indra) - Yogini
South-East (Agni) - Kaumari
South (Yama) - Varahi

West (Varuna) - Vaishnavi

How to Identify the Yoni Group

To identify the Yoni group associated with a Nakshatra, first locate the Nakshatra in the classification table. The column in which it appears identifies its corresponding directional group and associated traditional name.

For example, Ashwini appears under East (Indra) and the associated name is Yogini. Similarly, Bharani is placed under South-East (Agni) and is associated with Kaumari.

Yoni Porutham
