Understanding the ancient methods for determining life span through the cosmic blueprint
Before any astrologer can make predictions about a person's life, they must first understand one fundamental question: How long will this person live? As the classical texts teach, "All the Yogas and the beautiful promises contained in the horoscope will materialize only if the horoscope promises enough longevity" .
This is why Ayurdaya (longevity determination) is considered one of the most important and challenging tasks in Vedic astrology. There are about 32 different methods of calculation, but no single method is perfect. The wise astrologer checks longevity by multiple methods and looks for convergence .
Classical texts divide human life spans into three broad categories :
| Category | Age Range | Sanskrit Term |
|---|---|---|
| Short Life | 0-32 years | Alpayu |
| Medium Life | 32-75 years | Madhyayu |
| Full Life | 75-120 years | Poornayu / Deerghayu |
Some texts further subdivide the early years:
Balarishta: First 8 years of life, governed by the mother's karma
Yogarishta: 8-20 years, a period of vulnerability
Alpayu: 20-32 years, short life span
Important note: "Till a child is of twelve years of age, his ayu nirnay should not be done. The first four years are governed by the poorva karmas of his mother, the next four years are governed by the karmas of his father and the next four years are governed by his own karmas" .
Before diving into complex mathematical calculations, astrologers use a simple method to determine whether a chart indicates short, medium, or full life.
The nature of the signs occupied by these two lords tells us about longevity:
| Sign Type | Result |
|---|---|
| Both in Movable (Chara) signs | Long life (Poornayu) |
| Both in Fixed (Sthira) signs | Short life (Alpayu) |
| Both in Dual (Dwiswabhava) signs | Medium life (Madhyayu) |
| One Movable, one Fixed | Medium life |
| One Movable, one Dual | Short life |
| One Fixed, one Dual | Long life |
Apply the same rule using the signs occupied by the Lagna and the Moon.
Apply the same rule using the Lagna and the Hora Lagna (a calculated point based on time elapsed since sunrise) .
Decision Rule: "If all three groups or any two of these indicate the same life span, that must be considered as final. In case the three groups indicate three different life spans, consider the one indicated by Group III" .
An alternative method uses :
Group I: Drekkana signs of Lagna and Moon
Group II: Navamsha signs of Lagna lord and Moon's lord
Group III: Dwadashamsha signs of Lagna lord and 8th lord
The classical texts provide several combinations that indicate long life (Poornayu) :
| Combination | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Benefics (Venus, Jupiter, Mercury) in Kendras (1,4,7,10) and Trines (1,5,9) | Long life above 66 years |
| All benefics in first six houses, malefics in last six | 80 years of life |
| Jupiter in a quadrant from the lord of birth with no malefics in quadrants | 100 years |
| Lagna aspected by its lord and Jupiter in a Kendra | Poornayu |
| Lagna lord and Sun in 10th house, Saturn in Lagna, Jupiter in 4th | Poornayu |
| Jupiter in Lagna, Venus in 4th, Saturn in 10th | Poornayu |
| Moon (not in Scorpio) in 6th, 7th, or 8th, aspected by all planets | Over 76 years |
According to Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the following indicate long life :
Benefics in Kendras → Poornayu
Eighth lord and malefics in Apoklimas (3,6,9,12) → Poornayu
Stronger of Lagna lord and 8th lord in a Kendra → Poornayu
Lagna lord and 8th lord in own houses → Poornayu
Short life (Alpayu) is indicated when :
All benefics in Apoklimas (3,6,9,12) → Alpayu
Eighth lord and malefics in Kendras → Alpayu
Stronger of Lagna lord and 8th lord in Apoklima → Alpayu
Lagna lord and 8th lord in inimical houses → Alpayu
Weak Lagna lord in 6th, 8th, or 12th, no benefic aspect → Alpayu
Malefics in Kendras, no benefic aspect, weak Lagna lord → Alpayu
Malefics in houses 2 and 12, no benefic aspect → Alpayu
When the quick assessment indicates a category, the astrologer then applies mathematical calculations. Parashara describes three primary methods :
The planets, when at their deepest exaltation, contribute the following years :
| Planet | Full Pindayu (Exaltation) | Base Pindayu (Debilitation) |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | 19 years | 9.5 years |
| Moon | 25 years | 12.5 years |
| Mars | 15 years | 7.5 years |
| Mercury | 12 years | 6 years |
| Jupiter | 15 years | 7.5 years |
| Venus | 21 years | 10.5 years |
| Saturn | 20 years | 10 years |
Calculation Steps :
Find the planet's longitude in degrees from 0° Aries
Subtract the planet's deep exaltation point
If the result exceeds 180°, reduce it by 180°
Calculate: Full Pindayu × Effective Arc / 360°
Reductions (Harana) Applied :
Shatrukshetra Harana: 1/3 reduction if planet is in enemy's sign (not for retrograde planets or Mars)
Astangata Harana: 1/2 reduction if planet is combust (not for Venus and Saturn)
Chakrapata Harana: Reduction based on the planet's position from the 7th house
Krurodaya Harana: Reduction based on malefic planets rising in the Lagna
This method is based on the Navamsha positions .
Calculation Steps:
Convert the planet's or Lagna's longitude into minutes
Divide by 200 (one Navamsha is 3°20' = 200 minutes)
The quotient indicates the number of Navamshas completed
Each completed Navamsha grants one year of life
Note: "The same reductions as per Pinday apply to Amsayu as well; i.e. half for a combust planet, one third for inimical placement and the ones due for placements in the half of the zodiac counted from the 12th backwards" .
Strengthening (Bharana) :
Retrograde or exalted planet: multiply by 3
Planet in own sign, own Navamsha, or Vargottama: multiply by 2
This method is based on the natural contributions of the planets without considering their exaltation or debilitation. It is considered the "natural" method of determining longevity.
The choice of method depends on which of the three-Lagna, Sun, or Moon-is strongest :
| Strongest Indicator | Method to Use |
|---|---|
| Lagna | Amsayu |
| Sun | Pindayu |
| Moon | Nisargayu |
If two are equally strong: Average the results of their respective methods .
If all three are equally strong: Average all three methods .
The classical texts emphasize that longevity determination requires more than just mathematics. "Matters like longevity cannot be decided by us mortals. They are in the hands of the supreme power and an Astrologer who wishes to indulge in longevity determination, needs help of this super power to make the correct judgement" .
Intuition plays a vital role: "The Astrologer can develop his intuition through worship and sadhana" .
Even after calculating longevity by many methods, "the Astrologer is almost forbidden to disclose the person's death to him. At the most he can give a very subtle hint" .
The reason is clear: The purpose of astrology is to heal and guide, not to frighten. As the shloka says, "An Astrologer can only give an Indication of what promise the future holds. Only Brahma, the creator, can say with certainty what will definitely happen" .
The Vedic tradition teaches that longevity is not completely fixed. The stories of Savitri and Satyavan and Markandeya Rishi show that "people whose life span has come to an end, have been granted more life by God himself" .
Additionally, "Length of life can also be increased or decreased by the person's own karmas in this life. People who lead a good regulated life from childhood, who follow good moral conduct, who eat less, and who respect god and the learned men, live up to their mathematically estimated life span or even longer. The people who do just the opposite have an untimely end" .
The Jaimini system offers an alternative approach. According to this school :
The Main Period of Death:
If the 7th from Atmakaraka or Lagna is occupied by Saturn, death occurs in the first third of the life span
If Rahu is in the 7th, death in the second third
If Ketu is in the 7th, death in the third third
Death-inflicting Rasis (Sthira Dasa):
Rasis that are Trikonas to the 8th house
Rasis hemmed in between malefics
Rasis with malefics in the 8th and 12th from them
The 8th or 12th Rasi devoid of benefic aspects
The Rasi held by Rudra
Death Timing: "If the 8th lord from Lagna is exalted, there will be a gain of one Navamsa Rasi Dasa, i.e., 9 years"
Ayurdaya is the determination of longevity or life span in Vedic astrology. It is considered the most important step before analyzing any other aspect of a horoscope. There are about 32 different methods of calculation, with the three primary ones being Pindayu, Amsayu, and Nisargayu .
Life spans are categorized into three main groups: Alpayu (short life, 0-32 years), Madhyayu (medium life, 32-75 years), and Poornayu or Deerghayu (full life, 75-120 years). Some texts further subdivide early life into Balarishta (0-8 years) and Yogarishta (8-20 years) .
Pindayu (used when Sun is strongest), Amsayu (used when Lagna is strongest), and Nisargayu (used when Moon is strongest). In Pindayu, each planet contributes fixed years based on its exaltation. In Amsayu, longevity is based on the Navamsha positions. Nisargayu uses the natural contributions of planets .
The seven planets from Sun to Saturn contribute years when in exaltation: Sun (19), Moon (25), Mars (15), Mercury (12), Jupiter (15), Venus (21), and Saturn (20). These are halved at debilitation. Each planet's contribution is calculated proportionally based on its distance from its exaltation point .
Four reductions are applied: Shatrukshetra Harana (1/3 reduction in enemy sign), Astangata Harana (1/2 reduction if combust), Chakrapata Harana (based on position from 7th house), and Krurodaya Harana (based on malefic planets in Lagna) .
Yes. The stories of Savitri-Satyavan and Markandeya show divine intervention can extend life. Additionally, a person's own actions—moral conduct, regulated life, respect for God and the learned—can help them live to their full potential or even longer. Bad actions can cut life short .
The "Three Pairs" method: Group I (Lagna lord and 8th lord signs), Group II (Lagna and Moon signs), Group III (Lagna and Hora Lagna signs). If the signs are both Movable → Long life; both Fixed → Short life; both Dual → Medium life; Mixed combinations have specific outcomes .
No. Even after checking longevity by many methods, "the Astrologer is almost forbidden to disclose the person's death to him. At the most he can give a very subtle hint." Only Brahma, the creator, can say with certainty what will definitely happen. The purpose is to guide, not to frighten .
The Jaimini method uses the Atmakaraka (soul planet), the 8th lord, and various dasa systems. If the 7th from Atmakaraka or Lagna is occupied by Saturn, Rahu, or Ketu, death occurs in the first, second, or third part of life respectively. Death-inflicting Rasis are identified and their dashas are analyzed .
Because "no one method can be called perfect." It is a "very serious and deep subject" that involves "much more than just the mathematical calculation." Intuition, developed through worship and sadhana, plays a vital role. Matters of life and death are ultimately in the hands of the divine
