Ashtakavarga is one of the most practical tools in Vedic astrology. It turns a whole chart into numbers you can compare: which houses are well supported, which need more effort, and which transits are likely to help. Once you know how to read it, a quick look at the table tells you a lot.
"Ashta" means eight and "varga" means division. For every planet, eight reference points are checked: the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn and the Lagna (ascendant). From each reference point, classical rules name the houses where the planet receives a benefic point, called a bindu (or rekha). A place with no point is a karana.
So for each planet you get a small table of twelve signs, each holding 0 to 8 bindus. That table is the planet's Bhinnashtakavarga (BAV).
The number of bindus each planet can give is always the same, whatever the chart. Only their distribution changes:

Adding the seven tables sign by sign gives the Sarvashtakavarga (SAV), 337 bindus spread across the twelve signs. That is where most readings start.
A useful self-check: if a chart's SAV does not add up to 337, the calculation is wrong.
Divide 337 by 12 and you get about 28. This average is the benchmark:

Read the sign by the house it occupies from the Lagna. With a Leo Lagna, for example, the SAV of Taurus is the SAV of the 10th house (career).
The SAV tells you about houses; the BAV tells you about a planet.
This is where Ashtakavarga is most used day to day. When a slow planet such as Saturn or Jupiter changes sign, look at two numbers:
Saturn moving into a sign where it has 5 or 6 bindus, in a house with an SAV above 28, is usually a productive transit, even if the house is one that transit books call difficult. Saturn entering a sign with 1 or 2 of its bindus and a low SAV is the time to be patient and careful. Some astrologers go further and divide each sign into eight parts (kakshyas), one per reference point, to time a transit within the sign. That is a finer technique built on the same tables.
For longevity and precise timing, classical texts reduce the tables in two steps, Trikona Shodhana and Ekadhipatya Shodhana, and then multiply the results by fixed factors (Pinda). These are specialist calculations. For everyday reading, the raw SAV and BAV tables above are what most astrologers use.
Suppose a chart has these SAV totals for the houses from the Lagna:

The astrologer would then check which dasa is running and where Jupiter and Saturn are transiting, and weigh them with these numbers.

Ashtakavarga is a strength measure, not a verdict. A low number does not block a house, and a high one does not guarantee success. It tells you where effort flows easily and where it needs more patience, which is useful guidance for planning, alongside the dasa and the full chart.
The 337 bindus average about 28 per sign. A house with 28 or more is taken as supportive, around 25-27 as average, and clearly below 25 as needing more effort.
Bhinnashtakavarga is each planet's own table, 0-8 bindus per sign. Sarvashtakavarga adds the seven planets' tables together, giving 337 bindus spread over the twelve signs.
A planet transiting a sign where it has 5 or more bindus in its own table usually gives better results than one crossing a sign with 0-3 bindus.
In the Parashara system used by most astrologers, no. The seven planets from the Sun to Saturn and the Lagna contribute the bindus.
