Bhavat Bhavam is a short Sanskrit phrase that means "from house to house". It is one of the simplest and most useful working principles in Vedic astrology. It says that when you judge a house, you should also look at the house that is the same distance from it as it is from the Lagna.
The best known example is career. The 10th house shows career. The 10th house counted from the 10th is the 7th house. So the 7th house and its lord also have a say in career.
Count from the Lagna to the house you are studying. Then count the same number again, starting from that house. In Vedic astrology the starting house is always counted as one.
A quick formula: double the house number and subtract one. If the result is above 12, subtract 12.
| House | Main matters | Bhavat Bhavam house | How the second house supports it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Self, body | 1st | The Lagna stands for itself |
| 2nd | Wealth, family, speech | 3rd | Own effort and skill build savings |
| 3rd | Effort, courage, siblings | 5th | Intelligence directs effort |
| 4th | Home, mother, comfort | 7th | The spouse completes the home |
| 5th | Children, intellect, merit | 9th | Fortune and blessings; grandchildren |
| 6th | Work, service, competition | 11th | Gains that come from overcoming obstacles |
| 7th | Spouse, partnership | 1st | Your own nature shapes the partnership |
| 8th | Length of life, change | 3rd | Vitality and courage |
| 9th | Fortune, father, dharma | 5th | Past merit and wisdom |
| 10th | Career, action, status | 7th | Public dealings, partners, clients |
| 11th | Gains, friends | 9th | Fortune behind the gains |
| 12th | Expenses, rest, liberation | 11th | What is earned is what can be spent or given up |
Notice that the answer is always an odd house: the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th. Each of these six houses supports two others. The 7th house, for example, supports both the 4th and the 10th, which is one reason the 7th matters far beyond marriage.
If the house names are new to you, Kendra Trikona and Dusthana Houses explains the groups.
The 5th and the 9th. Each is the Bhavat Bhavam of the other's partner: the 9th is the 5th from the 5th, and the 5th is the 9th from the 9th. This is why the two trikonas are always read together for fortune, children and merit.
The 10th and the 7th. A career rarely grows alone. The 7th shows the people you deal with: partners, clients, the public. A strong 7th lord often shows a career helped by a partner or by trade.
The 8th and the 3rd. The classical texts name both as houses of length of life. This is a matter of general vitality and resilience, not a way to calculate a date. The calm, traditional view of this subject is in Maraka Planets and Longevity in Astrology.
The 6th and the 11th. The 6th is effort against resistance: jobs, competition, loans. The 11th is what you gain when the resistance is overcome.
The 4th and the 7th. The 4th is the home you are born into and the home you build. The 7th, the spouse, is the 4th from the 4th.
For any question, check three things, and then add the fourth:
When all four agree, the result is clear and strong. When the main house is weak but the Bhavat Bhavam house is strong, the matter is often delayed or comes in a different form, but it is not denied. When both are weak, that area of life needs more effort.
Take a Leo Lagna and ask about career.
Suppose Venus is in Virgo, the 2nd house. Virgo is the sign where Venus is debilitated. Reading the 10th lord alone, you might call the career weak.
Now look at the Bhavat Bhavam. Suppose Saturn is in Libra, the 3rd house, where Saturn is exalted, and the 7th house has no malefic in it. The supporting house is strong. A fair reading is this: the career starts slowly and the person may feel undervalued at first, but steady effort, good working partners and dealings with the public build it up over time. The work may involve finance or speech (2nd house Venus) and communication or sales (3rd house Saturn).
The principle did not cancel Venus's weakness. It added a second witness, and the two together gave a more accurate picture.
A close cousin of this idea is reading a relative's affairs by treating that relative's house as a Lagna. The 9th house is the father, so the 10th house, being the 2nd from the 9th, shows the father's wealth. The 4th is the mother, so the 6th, the 3rd from the 4th, shows the mother's younger siblings. This "house from house" counting uses the same method, applied to any pair of houses.
Bhavat Bhavam means reading the house that is as far from a house as that house is from the Lagna. Double the house number and subtract one to find it. The 7th supports the 10th and the 4th, the 9th supports the 5th and the 11th, the 5th supports the 9th and the 3rd, the 3rd supports the 8th and the 2nd, and the 11th supports the 6th and the 12th. Use it as a second witness after the house, its lord and its karaka.
It means from house to house. To judge any house, also look at the house that is as far from it as it is from the Lagna. For the 10th house, that is the 10th from the 10th, which is the 7th house.
Double the house number and subtract one. If the answer is more than 12, subtract 12. For the 9th house: 9 x 2 - 1 = 17, and 17 - 12 = 5, so the 5th house.
Because the 3rd is the 8th from the 8th. The 8th house is the main house of length of life, and by Bhavat Bhavam the 3rd supports it.
No. The house itself, its lord and its natural significator come first. The Bhavat Bhavam house is a supporting witness that confirms or weakens the reading.
