Facebook is a shit and its AI Needs More Testing Before Celebrating Its Achievements
Recently, I faced an unexpected and frustrating experience with Facebook's group posting system. As a content creator trying to share my latest YouTube video, I posted to about 7 to 9 Facebook groups. To my surprise, Facebook blocked my account from posting to any groups for two weeks. This incident highlights a significant issue with Facebook's current AI moderation system, which is worth discussing.
The Issue with Facebook's AI Moderation
Facebook has been promoting its advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, particularly through its parent company, Meta. However, my experience suggests that their AI systems might need more rigorous testing and refinement before being lauded as significant achievements. The AI should be capable of distinguishing between spam and genuine content sharing, especially when a user is actively engaging in multiple groups.
A Lack of Common Sense
What is more frustrating is the lack of common sense in the system's response. Instead of blocking users outright, Facebook should first issue a warning or an alert. This alert could inform the user that their activity might be considered spam and suggest they slow down or take other measures. Blocking users without warning not only disrupts their activities but also discredits the effectiveness of Facebook's AI.
An Unfair Business Model?
Another concerning aspect is the seeming bias towards paid promotions. Facebook allows users to pay for boosted posts and advertisements, yet it penalizes those who try to share their content organically. This raises questions about the fairness of Facebook's business model. Shouldn't the platform support organic content sharing instead of pushing users towards paid options?
A Call for Better Testing and User-Centric Policies
Before Meta and Facebook celebrate their AI achievements, they should ensure their systems work effectively and fairly. This includes rigorous testing in real-world scenarios and implementing user-centric policies that prioritize user experience over revenue generation.
This experience should be an eye-opener for Facebook and other tech companies. They must balance technological advancements with practical, user-friendly implementations. Users should not be penalized for engaging with the community, and AI systems should be designed to enhance, not hinder, the user experience.
