Vaayu is the god of wind and is represented as a fair complexioned man riding a deer and carrying a white flag. Vayu controls the air and dries up the water. He has wings to travel in the air, and the instrument of touch, along with the sense objects of touch, are his domain.
Maharaja Pandu's wife Kunti invoked Vayu, the demigod of the wind, who begot the mighty Bhima. Upon Bhima's birth the supernatural voice said, "This child will be the foremost of all strong men." Kunti then called for Indra, the King of heaven, and thus Arjuna was born.
Vayu is also said to have begotten a son, Hanumana, from Anjani, Ila was the daughter of Vayu. With her husband, Dhruva Maharaja, she begot a son named Utkala and a very beautiful daughter.
Vayu is in charge of the northwestern part of the universe. The moon, or Candraloka, is one of the four important places of residence for the demigods. Beyond Manasa Lake is Sumeru Mountain. On the eastern side of this mountain is the planet Devadhani, where Indra resides. On the southern side is the planet known as Samyamani, where Yamaraja resides. On the western side is the planet known as Nimlocani, the residence of Vayu, the demigod who controls the wind. And on the northern side of the mountain is the moon, which is also known as Vibhavari.
