Taboo and Fear Element

Many Badagas feared Kurumba magia (shamanic magic).
A disturbance between the two communities could cause:
- Crop failure
- Illness in livestock or children
- Paranormal disturbances

Therefore, maintaining peaceful relations was considered essential for survival.

There are theories that:

Some Badaga clans may have originated from Kurumba branches or intermarried in ancient times before strict endogamy was established.
Kurumbas may be the ancestral spiritual protectors of the Nilgiri plateau, and Badagas honored them in that capacity.

However:

Respect still exists for Kurumba spiritual knowledge.
In some remote hattis, Kurumbas are still called for ancestral or spirit-related rituals.

The relationship between Badagas and Kurumbas is:

A historical relationship of cautious cooperation — Badagas as agriculturists and Kurumbas as traditional forest priests and spirit mediators.

It is not a blood relationship, but a ritually interdependent and spiritually strategic relationship deeply rooted in tribal cosmology.
